I'm refurbishing a 1910 Donaldson Cauldron furnace. The firebox exit at the top is oval shaped. What kind of flue pipe would have been used ? Would there have been an oval to round adapter or oval pipe, or round pipe squeezed to fit in the oval exit ?
Yes, I've done that. It works for singlewall pipe - but not for the new double and triplewall pipes. For those you have to use a preformed oval-to-round adapter. Depending on your installation you may want to use multiwall pipe; I do when I can.
Back to the squeezed singlewall pipe that we grew up with, even for singlewall pipe you can buy oval to round adapters at most any stove hardware store. Not expensive. Or Google it.
My old Vermont Castings Encore stove a oval output. Back in 1996 I was able get an adapter from oval to 8 inch round double wall; that is 8 inch i.d. and 10 inch o.d. I got it either from Vermont Castings or from Duravent. I probably still have it so I can measure.
My Dad was service manager for Sears in the 1950s. He was back in the warehouse putting up stock when a fellow worker walked past carrying a hacksaw. Dad said
"Bill what are you doing back here?"
Bill replied..."Oh some stupid s.o.b. wants to buy half a section of fluepipe". Then Bill turns around and the customer was right behind him!!!!!
"And this gentleman wants to buy the other half" Bill said.
oval to round adapters are available. Take some measurements and go to a good hardware store that sells a lot of stove pipe or a stove shop. as a last resort contact a heating company and have them make one, but be prepared to pay heavily for that
