I have a JD 4105 with HST. Lately, after shifting into neutral, the engine will start to shut down when I get off the seat. It does not do this all the time, but when it does, it is quite aggravating. I have been told I need a seat safety switch, but that switch should not be a problem if I am in neutral and it should shut me down all the time. Could it be a problem? I've also been told I need a neutral start safety switch. Anyone have a similar issue? Where is this switch physically located?

Welcome to TBN.

What do you mean by "neutral?"

On my BX, if the HST pedal is not exactly on "zero" speed, it will do that. I don't think I have ever shifted the range lever to neutral and left it there.

I have a three position transmission shift: high range, neutral, and low range. If it is in neutral, it will not move. Doesn't matter if I push forward pedal or reverse pedal

You probably have something like the PTO turned on or the computer thinks it's turned on. Rear or front PTO will do this. Also if the pedals are not fully in the neutral position might do it, binding or mddy. Even tho the tractor is not moving they might be slightly pushed.

If the 3 range shifter is like my 4x10 tractors there is no safety switch on it. The seat switch sounds like it is doing its job and working.

I've had the same thing happen on my 4200 hst. I have to tap the forward pedal and it will crank back up. I lubed the pedal assy. and sprayed switch cleaner in the switch....so far so good.

I'll check the pedal theory out. Whatever is going on is something that I cannot reproduce all the time. I may go a whole day and all is fine. Then the next time it does its thing.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

I know exactly what you're going through as I too have a 4105... The reason that the Operator Out Of Seat switch is 'kicking in' intermittently is because you're not quite in the neutral position and, therefore, the seat 'kill switch' recognises that the tractor is still 'in gear'; which it is. The HST positions (in my experience) are FWD, not-quite FWD/not quite NEU, NEU, not quite NEU/not quite REV, REV. You'll have particularly noticed this idiosyncrasy when initially going FWD = revs up, put the lever into FWD and nothing happens... push the lever more FWD and feel it 'bump(?)' into place and off you go.

It's an embuggerance but you'll get used to it.

Enjoy the site.

I have a JD4300 with HST and exactly the same problem as you for several years. The problem is that the neutral switch isn't engaged (pressed) when you remove your foot from either HST pedal. So your tractor "thinks" it is moving. When you get off the seat, the tractor wants to protect you so it shuts down to prevent you from being run over. The switch on my tractor is located about 12 inches to the left of the HST pedals. You can find the location on your tractor by laying on your back under the tractor and manually moving one of the HST pedals with your hand. Of course don't try this while the tractor is running.

Is it a switch problem? I would jumper the seat switch wires to "test" the issue. If it fixes the problem, then you know it is one of the safety switches.

I disagree! The seat safety switch is doing its job. While I believe it is a safety switch that is causing his issues, it is not the seat switch but the neutral switch.
