I'd like to now has anyone built something that they can simply drag around behind their tractor to smooth out "lumpy" ground?

First of all, where I live the "dirt" is actually sand. There are many Oak Trees, and clumpy grass.

I think if I had something heavy enough to pull behind, but light enough to not really dig in, it might help me to smooth out the surface of my property. Maybe even a good sized log I could chain on each end with large eyelets?

Or a square wood or metal post...?

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have used various things with mixed success - depends a lot on your particular situation. But if it makes sense based on what you know about your property you might try a chain link fence gate - they come in various sizes and you can weigh them down as needed.

My neighbor was using the triangular front section from a house trailer. A hunk of chain link fence and a 6 X 6 would probably work, too.

Railroad ties pulled with chain - I like the longer switch ties. Chain them to be flat or edge up. Easy to adjust rear angle. Currently using 12 ft 8 inch wide I beam from scrap yard. Welded a couple flat bar pads on the bottom and multiple places to hook cable to change angle.

About anything pulled with help level ground. Metal holds up better than wood. The item that has surprised me the most is long heavy chain. There are even videos of them having two tractors or dozier pull an end of a major chain level the ground. Just don't run the same pattern over and over.

We have used just about everything we had laying around, but probably one of the better ones is a 16" I beam, 15' long. Have drug it behind a 6' disk when trying to level out property also.

The best thing I ever used is a piece of what is called deck screen from a portable crushing plant. I had a piece that was about 8' x 4' . They are made from 1/4" round stock welded together with different sized holes to separate the crushed rock as it is vibrated through the screen deck. The piece that I had was 2" holes and on one side the ends were bent down and the other side bent up. You can add as much weight as you want and they do a great job on smoothing ground out. I used mine mostly for dirt road maintenance and it did a good job. The best thing is they will usually just give them away.

I made a cheap and easy land leveler that works very well...4 railroad ties fastened together that I drag with the tractor:

This is what the ground looks like after a few passes:

I have about a 8 foot long, 6 foot wide section of chain link fence, I folded it over and put a "T" stake across inside fold to attach "V" chain to.... Placed a lot of heavy stones in between the two layers of chain link and them wired the two sections shut to form a large pocket.....

Does great for manicure and leveling gravel drive way and smoothing animal borrows mound and gopher mounds in meadow area...

Also have a 5-6 foot section of RR Track with chains and hooks... IT also works.... The chains are short enough with 3PH down it drags well, if 3PH raised it is just above ground and I can back up without running over it...

I built this "drag" out of 4x4's and plywood. Predrilled the holes for the spikes. Drag it with my ATV. I can put a 40# bag of wood pellets on each corner for added weight. View attachment 665075. I like deserteagle 71's drag also. It's a larger version of what I have.
