I bought a 3 pt hitch snowblower today and when I got it home I found the driveshaft went on hard . I did get it on after greesing the splines. does anyone have any tricks to installing one. Just so everyone knows this is my first pto driven implement.

It always takes a me little cursing before the ring snaps to lock it on to the pto shaft. The tight quarters, pulling back on this while pushing that is a recipe for frustration. It doesn't matter if it the snow blower, tiller or brush hog the experience is always the same.

Was it hard to slide over the splines, or did it just plain not slide in and out easily?
If it doesn't slide an and out freely, I would clean the sliding section off with thin oil or degreaser (to get rid of the old grease), the add new grease.
If it just was hard to get onto the splines on the tractor, I would use thin oil and/or degreaser and a old toothbrush or small wire brush to clean them off, then spray both ends with a lithium based grease.

Trick - yes. Disengage the rear PTO and it will spin freely and allow you to line up the splines more easily.

My 'cure all' is WD40.

I liberally spray both tractor splines and PTO inner splines and my shaft always slips in just fine.

My shaft slips in just fine also, thanks.:p

Yup to all of the above: Clean, properly lubricated, PTO in neutral.

Also, when I take shaft-driven attachments off, I remove the tractor half of the PTO shaft and hang it on pegs on the wall of the shed. A number of advantages to this:

Not tripping over the shaft while rummaging through the shed.

U-Joint not laying in the dirt.

Sliding joint not getting hung up due to dried grease or lack of lube.

Reminds me to lube the shaft occasionally.

Gives me a moment to visually inspect the shaft for potential problems.

My Kubota 2620 shafts for the front blower slide and secure quite easily. Suggest that you look for a burr on one of the splines. Might have been dropped and or nicked.

Went to put my blower on today and had issues with the drive shaft but I found if I got it started and then raised the blow up a little it suddenly slid right in all the way..
