I just bought a Kubota 1100 UTV. A new toy for an old man:) Anyway, it came with mud digging HUGE lug 12" tires. I have no mud...sand...creek crossings...etc. I DO have dry leaves and steep hills, limbs to drive over, sapling "STOBBS" or stakes (2" cutoffs) that I drive over....
I'm thinking of changing to 14" wheels for ground clearance and now I'm wondering about the tires. I don't need "balloon big lug" types. What I DO want is 6 or even 8 PLY for those sapling stakes sticking up to puncture tires or sidewalls. Anyone ever tried 14" SNOW TIRES???? Ideas? Thanks, guys.:confused2:

congrats on your new toy.....have fun!.....I was getting flats like crazy when I first got my tractor because of stumps, sticks, trees, and whatnot.......added gemplers bulletproof slime and haven't had a flat in over 12 years....for that matter I haven't even needed to add air to the tires.......just another thought for you........Jack

6 ply is what I have but in winter I find an ATV too light so it really doesn't matter what tire you use they need chains if you have any ice or are going to plow with it. I chain up all four.

JFH28,
Thanks, that stuff does work. I have never had probs with my tractor, which is surprising 'cause I cut trails and whatnot thru my woods. I'm glad 'cause I have the big tires about 70 percent full of Antifreeze for weight. I DID have an aggravating tire experience with "Tire KINGDOM" last month. I got a "roofing" nail IN THE TREAD, about an inch from the edge of the tread. I havve and paid for "ROAD HAZARD" when I bought the tires. I went to T.K. expecting to get the tire patched. NO.....too close to the sidewall....(can you say BS?) OK, replace it with the "Road Hazard". Nope, you have 50,000 miles on these tires so we offer $12 prorate off a new tire. Guys, those tires still have 50 percent tread left....(Bridgestone) I was, well, let's say "annoyed". I bought a bottle of SLIME, jacked the car, let out all air, rotated tire to hole down, put in HALF bottle of SLIME and refilled. Then I drove about 15 minutes and have not lost ONE POUND since. No vibration either....I was worried about balance but....it's OK
. :D

I don't worry too much about tires. My Polaris ATP(all terrain pickup) flounders when the snow gets much over 18" deep. Its just too light.

Guys, I might have mislead you........I was thinking of "snowtires" to get thru my dry leaf hilly woods rather than the big lug balloon types. I DO NOT go into the mountains when there is snow....nope, not me...too old...too Florida acclimated....(wuss-ed) I "might" be able to get UP to my property but sliding down is not a good thought

Boeing,

be careful with slime, we use that and fix a flat in atv's ALL the time, it works good for about 3 months, then it sometimes dries up and the tires start leaking again, fix a flat seems to last a touch longer. and we use cases of the stuff atv'ing

I think you are overthinking it. if you can find the snow tire to fit the rims or another set of rims with same bolt pattern.. i think you will be just fine. People take their trucks off road all the time with all snow tires, etc and its all about traction, tread type and weight. dry leaves? its not like you planning to hold your brakes on a hill downward and expecting it to hold.. balloon type or not .. they all gonna slide if the treads cant punch thru the leaf layer to dirt to hold you.

If you are looking at new tires, we have had good luck with Carlisle All Trail II tires on a UTV type vehicle, they are pretty heavy duty.

Aaron,
Thanks for the Carlisle suggestion. I went to their site and it appears that most of their tires are 4 PLY. I then searched further and found this tire......
Tell me what you think. Thanks http://www.atvutvtires.com/MAXXIS-LIBERTY-30X10X14-30X10RX14-ATV-UTV-TIRES/

And Radioman is absolutely correct, I remember from my "snow days" a narrower tire would spin down to the gravel and get you going. A wide tire would sit on the snow and spin....and spin.....
