I was out digging and the shank snapped on my excavator bucket. Would it be possible to weld the piece back onto the shank with some 7018 rod or would it break again? I gather my best option would be to weld on a new shank. I can stick weld but my concern would be cutting off the old shank. The only way for me to remove the shank is with my oxy/acetylene torch. Would this be the correct way of cutting off the broken shank or is a better way needed?.

Cutting off with a torch is prob the quickest and easiest way.

It'll be messy but torch is the only way I know of. Glasses, non lacing boots, patience.

I worked in shop and we were set up to arc air gouge them off. And it is a much quicker way to do it however most people do not have the home equipment to do this! You would need very high amperage welding machine, very high output air compressor and a gouging torch. Best done outside as the spark show is awesome!

I do not have a good view of it,, but, if it were mine, I would weld it,,
add a piece of metal top and bottom, and fully weld that,, also,,

Your cost will be about $5 total,, why not try it? Yes, replacement is good, but, repair is cheap,,
and, reinforced repair might even be stronger than a replacement,,

I agree , I would try to repair first! Nothing to loose? Make sure that you grind the crack to create a V grove. Not so deep that you change the diameter of the bolt hole. use your stick welder with small diameter rod. Make multiple small passes but make sure you clean all the slag off between passes you don't want any inclusions in weld. Alternate from side to side to balance heat and allow part to cool a bit between passes. Small Multi pass will allow you to control the heat better otherwise whole thing will just melt or you will have lack of fusion on sides of weld. I don't know what style of tooth goes on shank but you may not have enough room to put a reinforcement over the weld as tooth may not fit over it? You may need to clean up the diameter of the hole once you are done! This can be done with small die grinder.

I might have misunderstood, but I think the tooth pins on this shank? If so, you can't build it up with reinforcement. The tooth has to side over it. It broke in it's weakest point which is at the retaining pin hole. This was caused by natural wear on the inside of the tooth and outside of the shank. The looseness allowed it to pry the end off the shank. I think it's time for a replacement.

Absolutely correct.

Bunch of ways to tend to this. You could gouge the welds out with torch or plasma and install a new tooth. ( easiest ) Or you could get the pin diameter and get a stick of carbon the same size and lay it in the groove and weld around and over it to build it back up. Then you just knock the piece of carbon out of the finished hole. There are oxy-fuel options too. Good luck !!
