Can anyone identify this snake?

It is a king snake. Most likely a common king snake as seen here

King Snakes are the best snake to have areound the place. They eat rodents, and other snakes including rattle snakes.

They are totally harmless

Looks more like a gray rat snake to me. If he had a checkerboard pattern (alternating black and white) on its belly, it was definitely a rat snake.

They are totally harmless unless you try to catch one. I was showing off for some citified friends (the G&T did not help ) and tried to catch one. There is still debate as to who caught who . That snake hurt when he latched on to me and it stank as well . BTW our friends never came back; and I will still catch snakes, but not while "influenced" . Jay

Dunno. They just creep me out. Can't even watch em on TV.

My father-in-law came by yesterday afternoon and saw it dead. He said "well, now your going to have mice and rat problems, just leave them alone". I said, I would rather sleep with mice than have a snake trying to get in the house. Over the last 10 years living here I have had 2 bull snakes in the house. One in the oven and another in a kitchen drawer.

Jim, using that same site, I would have identified him as a rat snake:

Also very harmless, but with a bad attitude and more likely to bite than a king snake.
