smoke when I engage PTO

Just noticed something the last few time's I've bushhogged. When I engage the PTO I tend to get a short puff of smoke from the exhaust on my 'bota 4630.

I've had the 4630 maybe a year and a half and it's only got around 100 hrs on it. It's been maintained per the manual and hasn't been abused.

I usually keep the rpm's low when I first engage the PTO and then after the cutter is turning I up the revs to operating levels.

Any ideas? Is this normal?

If its black smoke then a puff when you engage the PTO at low rpms is normal for a diesel. You may also see a little bit of black smoke when you rev it up. When bogged/heavily loaded diesels are... just smokey .

If it is another color that may be another problem.

Maybe the governor kicking in a little? Not abnormal for a diesel.

yes, it's just a very brief burst of black smoke... So it sounds normal and I'll disregard it from now on. thanks for the reassurance, just never noticed it before now

When you hit the PTO you put an additional load on the engine. Diesels put out black smoke under load - completely normal. Watch a tractor pull some time - the machines will be putting out tons of black smoke when the sled gets heavy.

The above answers are what I was going to say. It's the govenor kicking in and adding fuel.

You may also want to lower the rpms down to idle before engaging the pto. Easier on the clutch pack in the pto. Then rev up the engine to operational speed.
