Mitsubishi MT20FD
Here lies my situation:
I have a Gray market Mitsubishi _24HP 3cyl diesel w/100 hours
*Trouble starting, ruled out fuel and airlock plugs had some carbon build-up but worked
*Tried starting so much the battery died, broke teeth on ring gear too..(bad day)
*Finally got started, lots of blue smoke, still has trouble restarting...
*Remove oil fill cap on top of valve cover while running and thers smoke
*HAVE NO BOOKS_Need Parts Manual for MT20FD.

Am I right in thinking the valve seals have gone? Also where do I find them for this tractor? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Not much info to go on, so it could be a lot of things. Based on amount of smoke, plus being in valve cover, and carbon buildup, I'd suspect stuck or broken ring(s). But, I can't be certain...:(

The valve seal, keeps oil out of the combustion chamber or exhaust flow. It does not keep exhaust out of the rocker arm cover.

You may have stuck rings, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you have a broken ring land or two. The hard starting indicates low compression. Many (foolish) people will spray ether to pop-start a recalcitrant diesel and will use too much. The correct amount VS too much is a very narrow line and is often only seen when parts break.

If it is just stuck rings, take out the glow plugs and put in 2 oz of 50-50 diesel/atf. Let that sit in there for 2 days. Then with the glow plugs out, crank it for 30 seconds (throttle at zero) and add 2 oz more of mix per cylinder. Wait 2 more days, crank and put the glows back in.

Clean the intake filter. I'm assuming it's in a cold area (?). If it is cold, heat up the intake with a hair dryer or heat gun. Direct the heat gun to the intake air when you try and start. When it starts, run the holy He-- out of it for 30-60 minutes.

You should also see about getting a diesel compression tester. Maybe e-ba ?

After over heating my New Holland, it had virtually the same conditions, plus blowing smoke out the crankcase breather. Turned out to be a piston that had galled and pinched the rings. See thread elsewhere in this section for the rebuild. The only way you can really be sure is with a leakdown or compression test.

As mentioned, I'd doubt it has anything to do with the guides or seals. If its guides or seals, typically you'll get a pretty good puff of smoke at start up, but it will quit almost immediately.

WOW!!! only 100 hours? takes 300 hours to break a tractor in!!

Don't put too much faith in the hours shown on the grey markets,I looked at several different models myself. They clean 'em up, maybe throw some paint on and reset 'em to zero, no telling what they really have. Like most have said--sure sounds like rings/pistons.

Yeah,
I know about what they do to make a buck... On the otherhand, I researched my source well and feel the tractor was described honestly & accurately. Although, I did loan the tractor to a friend and it was after it was returned that I started having the problems. And while the person is my friend they do lack the care and attention I give to MY machines. Is it possible that working a small tractor too hard or bogging it down in the high gears would cause this sort of early motor failure??

After all, I used the tractor weekly from mid-June to mid-October with no problems...No smoking, no hard starting, nothing. From the time it came off the truck, it started right up_no smoke, no hesitation. Used it all summer clearing my land, loanded it to a friend , and now I'm here... So does anyone know where to find a rebuild kit for an MT20FD??

Doesn't sound good. Low compression would explain the hard starting and the smoke. As others have said worn, stuck or broken rings. Sounds like your going to have to tear into it. Have you done a compression test?

Well sounds like you did your homework in buying the tractor--good! As for for "bogging it down" I'm no expert, but the short answer is --yes. These small diesels have to be used in their power range. Seems a lot of folks are afraid to take them much above an idle, which is not good when working the tractor. But how long did your friend have the tractor, did he use it enough to cause the problems--hard to say. As was said before, do a compression check first, it'll tell you what direction you need to take.

Try this fellow for parts and maybe a little guidance, I know he's helped several people with grey tractors.
