Found a used HD Smith brand cutting torch kit for $175. Comes with two-new tips and a cart. Seller says they are about 8-years old and have been in his garage unused for the last 5-years. Does not come with tanks.

Read several previous posts and it seems Smith is one of the better brands and discounting brand loyalty no one really has anything bad to say about their equipment.

Not having used a gas welder since HS Welding class 25+ years ago. What are some of the things to check? Understand dry rotted hoses are not good, what else.

Also, what should I expect to pay for leased tanks and refills?

Anything else before I drive 200 miles?

TIA

Not trying to talk you out of gas and I do know about your area but around here, cruising craigslist, you can find nice Lincoln Tombstone stick for that kind of money. My tanks have sat so long they are outdated now. Tanks cost me a couple of hundred 10 years ago.

I bought my Smith reg/ cutting torch/ welding tips/ rosebud in '71. Last friday I cut off a bolt on a brush hog.....bought new, never a problem. Look for faulty o rings, though I've never replaced mine. I've always kept them stored in plastic and cracked the tank valve before mounting regs. Never a problem, to me more refined than Victor. If they've been taken care of, you have some fine equip. bb

Beltzington,
How did you do on the torch? $175 for a heavy duty Smith set was probably worth the drive. I sure like my Smith Md-510Lpt oxy/propane set. It is only 1 1/2 year old and no problems with it.

Thanks all - I picked them up last weekend and everything is in very good condition. Only negative I found was the heating tip was for a medium duty Smith not my handle. I'm sure I can sell it on ebay, so no worries. Beside the cart had a $225 price tag still on it so I'm happy with the deal.

Priced tanks and found I can lease them for $6/month and filling the commercial size is about $41/tank or $21/tank for the smaller tanks. I actually found a set of commercial tanks for $125 from a coworker I just can't decide if I want to wrestle the large tanks around.

Since I do not have any electricity hooked up on our property the gas is will allow me to scrape some abandoned trailers, plus I'm looking forward to reacquiring some skills. Thanks again, I am sure I'll have some more questions.
