I've done the searches here, but I didn't get much on smaller PTO driven wood chipper/shredders

I'm looking for the smallest, least expensive, PTO driven wood chipper/shredder I can find. So far my search has found the Mighty Mac TPH122 which is 1399$ plus tax and shipping($140) at Northern. It's a 3.5" capacity one with a hopper for the small stuff -- leaves and twigs.

So my question is, are there any smaller/less expensive ones around? Does anyone have experience with the Northern H. one?

Anything larger that 3" I saw up and burn. Rental around here is $240 a shot, I would use it perhaps three or four times a year (although if I owned one, I would use it more often and not have that big pile of crap in my yard all the time.) I want a PTO version because I don't want yet another another small engine.

Thanks for any pointers or experiences you might provide.

I was actually suprised to find that Home Depot down here has started renting Vermeer chippers. It was $153/day for a 4" unit. Maybe check your local HD perhaps it's a nationwide service now for rentals? OR, start hitting the used equipment sales and wait for a deal.

I've also been thinking of buying a wood chipper, but I don't need any firewood since it never gets below about 50 degrees in the winter, so was wanting a large one. I know my tractor can't handle a huge chipper, so I was thinking of the Jinma 6", but most likely I'll end up renting a 16" or 18" machine.

Like I said, I don't really want to rent any more. In any case, apparently rental costs are lower where you are. At HD here, $153 is about the 4 hour rate and after the trip home, getting it switched to the tractor, and driving it to where the pile is, I could chip for about twenty minutes then I'd have to pretty much start the return trip.

I expect the fees are higher here because they aren't going to rent them out for 4 months of the year.

I'll sell my MacKissic one that connects to my Gravely for about $200, you come and get. I'm sure that you could adapt it to connect to a 3 pt with some torch work and the right PTO length.

Its hammers are like new, still completely square. Leaves feed real good through the big hopper. Only trouble is it has NO CHIPPER. You have to hammer everything.

I've also a TroyBilt 8 hp stand-alone chipper/shredder that has a hitch to pull behind a tractor. Can't sell it until maybe a year from now after my wife gets over the shock of paying for my new tractor. Then, I can get a MacKissic or DR 3 pt chipper. These are both $1,500-1,700.

The Jinma 6" is definitely not "small", although you DO get a lot of chipping ability for not a lot of money.

One word for you;

Bush Hog

OK, thats two words. Get yourself a good quality used bush hog for $500. Rake the stuff into small piles and slowly set the rotary mower down on it. A good quality mower like a Woods Brush Bull will grind branches, leaves and garden waste quicker and easier then any little chipper out on the market.

Just my .02

Perhaps I could mount the bush hog verticly and throw the stuff at it.

I was hoping someone on TBN had one of the Northern Hyd. (or similar) small chipper/shredders who might relate their experience.

You might look at the BearCat PTO Chipper/Shredder. I've had one for two years and am really pleased with it. Got it locally and avoided shipping. If its too big to chip, its firewood! The shredder is a nice feature if you are into gardening and such.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
