Small tree puller

My ex-father in-law had a tool he used to pull small trees out of his field. It worked like a set of ice tongs and as you pull with the tractor it griped tighter to hold the tree while being pulled out. Does any one know where I might find one?

I have a similar tool. I'm pretty sure I purchased it from an outfit called Cumberland General Store. At the time, about 3 years back, they did not have online ordering. They did send me a free catalog via snail mail however. I found it listed in there.
You might try a web search to see if they have an online presence.

Maybe I am getting the wrong picture, but if you do a search on "logging tongs", I think you will get what you want.

Also, Northern Hydraulics (among others) have tongs.

Attach the log tongs to a 3ph boom pole to raise the front end of the log off the ground.

This is what I have. I purchased a small pulley at tractor supply that I hooked to the cable so I can pull it from the drawbar at different angles.

Thanks for the link. That set-up looks much better for pulling 'small' brush. I was thinking 'stems' of larger size. Those grubbing tongs look like they would fasten on real well, kinda like a bulldog. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But not to high up on the boom pole or you may turn the tractor over. It's always best to hook up as close to where the drawbar is to preserve the center of gravity.
I nearly flipped mine backward by tying up high on the boom pole and lifting a large tree trunk. The big deal is when you start to pull it, and if it hits anything on the ground, the pendulum of the rear wheels can cause it to over backward if it's tied too high. Be careful and this should work fine. John

oh not sure how many trees you have to PULL: but I wanted to say a Chain wrapped a couple times around the bottom will actually PULL the tree with out ripping it appart. those TONGS increase the BITE into the log/tree as the pulling force increases this means on a small dia tree it will nearly cut all way though before it pulls out on many occasions.

the chain will often SLIP and rip off the bark some but usually bites good enough to rip out the tree.

I pulled one about 2" dia last week, with FEL right next to my propane tank. pulled tree and roots that went 4+ feet in each dirrection had to BACK up after traising it 3~4' in air to continue pulling the fine roots. after it was done, I never even got off, just drove back to burn pile and unchained it and dropped it on. tree was probalby 12~14' high. Tongs would have split it with out pulling as it is a soft wood fast grower. I have so many that the field which was brush hogged for planting (good trees in) has 10' hi ones this year after ewarly sping hogging last year. yet my plantings are only the same height /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif other plantings are doing much better just my CLAY is so dense that deep rooted trees barely grow while these shallow rooted things grow faster than the weeds... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
