My son wanted a small kitchen Island for his apartment. He pays $150.00 for one at the cheap box store. While assembling the drawer side falls off and he brings it to me to fix.
I look at it and it is one piece of solid pine attached to compressed paper board. I tell him to take it back, get his money back and I will build him one.
I found an old solid wood desk, bottom was solid pine and the top was 1.75" thick oak butcher block. I plan to make the top into a work bench and only paid $35.00 for it.
I told him I could use the two bottom ends, put them together, reinforce them, build a base, top, and put it on casters. He liked the idea, of course he has yet to offer the $35.00 to me
So here is the finished product. He and his girlfriend picked out the paint color. I made the top and framing with some salvaged 100+ year old heart pine we have access to.
