If you guys look at todays seat time for july 22 or 23 around, you will see a post of a picture of the J5 bombardier tractor I use for picking moose up. On top of the roll bars I have a rack welded using galvanized pipe 1/2 diameter. To pick a moose up, we usually wrap a come along cable around the chest and hook the come-a-long cable to the rack on the roof of the machine. This is fine and its all we used for 40 or 50 years....but I was wondering about setting up a little winch, removable so its not in the way of people standing on the side, or can get snagged when tipping into trees going through the woods...and can be just hooked to battery using quick clamps. I thought about something to hang over the rack and done so so it don't slide ahead or back when winching if the machine is tipped forward or back on a small hill/grade. Or possibly welding a receiver on roof somewhere and then have the winch on the receiver insert and just slide in and pin in place while winching. This would be just to lift moose up on the side of the machin only, as the rack wouldn't take winching the machine out and such. I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on a mounting system.

Just to be clear, the running boards above the tracks is where we place full moose. I just have to lift the moose up from the ground up above the tracks. We then tie it on and drive away. Comelongs work good. Just slow .

Picking up a moose. Wouldn't liqour be quicker? :)

Our used ATV came with a $100 12v winch mounted that should lift a moose to speed up loading.

Alcohol doesn't work I've tried it. Yeah a winch of that sort would be fine...but how should it be mounted to enable easy removal/installation on the roof of the J5.

How about a rear mounted boom that swivels with the winch on it? You could use it for either side and stow it laid down along side if you mounted it to one of the rear corners. If that won't work you could mount the female half of a receiver and have the winch mounted on the male end and just slip it in when needed. There are quick connects large enough to use hooked to battery.

What Dave said, and that's the approach I'm taking for our "light logging winch" which I want to move between our ballast box, box blade, and our utility trailer using quick connects for the battery connections and the trailer hitches as the mounts.

We also have the HF truck crane, and I'm also toying with the idea of making it mountable there.

Also, although I don't remember where at present, I know I saw pre-made winch mounts with the ATV and standard hitches already to go somewhere at a pretty reasonable price.

Good luck,
Thomas

PS: I also like the liquor approach, but I think a nice high alcohol craft beer like a barleywine would work better, cause aren't moose ungulates that like grains?...

how did you do it with the come a long? I would think one could do some thing similar. A plate with a couple of short chains on it, or a hook to fit over the roll cage, bar. I know the pictures are of a hand winch, but I can not see why a small power unit would not work as well, this what I made to help assist me when I set up a tower once,

added one more picture, when I was typing earlier could not fine one like it, of the small power winch mount.
