I have a B-2710 w/ 182 hours which has become impossible to crank.

Two pasture mows ago it went dead acting as though it was starved for fuel. I cleaned the air filter and fuel filter at that time and it seemed to do ok that day.

Yesterday it cranked ok and got to the pasture where it died again. Try as I might, it wouldn't restart. Kept sounding like it was starved for fuel after running for 20 seconds or so. Some white smoke.

Today it made it back to the shop but died again with same problems.

I changed the fuel and air filters with no positive results. I added an additive to solve water issues in the fuel. That hasn't worked.

When the engine cranks it runs until the fuel in the filter well (which on mine is see through) drains to the bottom. Then it quits. Then the filter well fills back up.

Questions are:
1- isn't the line from the tank to the fuel well gravity flow? and if so, why does the fuel stop flowing when the engine is running and resume flowing when the engine dies?

2- is there a fuel pump on this model?

Many thanks to all for any help you all can provide on this subject!

Confused Carl…
You are confusing me, (not my first time).
When you say “it went dead”… are you referring to electrically dead? Like you lost electrical power?
Will not crank… usually refers to the starter will not crank the engine… another electrical problem?

Trying not to be… confused KennyV.

Have you tried to remove fuel line from tank to filter. If it does not flow freely. You may have dirt in tank blocking flow of fuel to the filter.
If you have a B2710 with a Serial # lower than 15496. It has a shut off valve that must be pointed down to be on. These fuel systems must also have to have the system bled to get proper flow of fuel. See your owners manual for proper bleeding of fuel system.
On the higher serial numbered there is a auto valve for shutting off fuel when filter is removed. This valve could be stuck. It is in the fuel filter assembly.

Ronjhall and KennyV - Thanks for the replies and sorry for the confusion.

As far as the "cranking" part goes, it does crank and run for a few moments until the fuel is sucked/pumped out of the filter well. So it's not an electrical problem I don't think.

This tractor is an older model with the manual shut off valve which is in the open position.

I have not as of yet disconnected the fuel line but will later today and give that a try.

Once I try that, I'll let you know if it works!

Thanks again for your help.

Confused Carl
