Just bought new holland 345d slow to start and oil pressure light slow to go off. Doesn't seem to rattle light stays on for 10 seconds. Changed oil and filter.

What temperatures are you trying to start in and what SAE viscosity oil did you put in?

The achilles heel of diesel engines is cold staring, in my opinion. They have a high compression ratio that increases starter torque requirements and in cold weather every thing works against you; the oil has a higher viscosity (both the hydraulic and the lube oil) the battery out put is reduced and the peak temperature in the cylinder that starts the combustion reaction is reduced. Those all "gang up" and make cold weather starting difficult.

Using a block heater in cold temperatures can ease the load on the starter and battery. It warms the cylinders and the oil on the cylinder walls to reduce the starting torque and assist the start of the commbustion process. Using a battery heater can also help by having more battery current available. Some folks use heaters on the hydraulic sumps to get their hydraulics going quicke and make starting easier. Some engines have Thermostart that will help down to about 10F by warming the intake air. Using a lower viscosity lube oil in winter can also help. Look at your owners manual foroil viscoity recommendations as a function of ambient temperatures.

Since your oil pressure light is staying on for 10 seconds, are you using the correct oil filter with an anti-drainback valve? if you are, I'd expect your oil is just cold and you may need to go to a lighter weight for your operating ambient temperatures.

i'd pull the sender from the side of the engine and put a mechanical gauge in there and check it.

them lights , depending on the sender specs.. can go off as low as 6 psi.. I'd hate to think it takes 10 seconds to make 6 psi.

also.. what oil, and what temps.

i'd run 5w40 in regular cold weather.. 15w40 in mild.. and 10w30 in cold cold weather / 5w40 syn / cold cold weather.. all C rated of course.
