slip clutch pto shaft on a spreader?

C/l as has a newer looking slip clutch pto shaft for 50$ and owner says it was from a spreader? Says extended length is 3ft. I didn't know spreaders used slip clutches, and that would make me think it is too light duty to use with my flail mower (currently counting on belt slippage as protection), or maybe a tiller, If I bought a used one without a shaft. Owner is polite, but not very knowledgeable, and not close by. Is he correct, and I'm uninformed about spreader shafts, or ???

There’s no reason he couldn’t have been using it on a 3pt spreader, but you’re right, 3pt spreaders don’t usually use one. A slip clutch probably costs more than the gearbox it’s there to protect.

Could it be not the original PTO shaft to the spreader? Meaning person with spreader needed a new PTO shaft. Bought one with slip clutch since it is what TSC (or whatever) had in stock at the time?

To me it looks like your basic generic pto shaft you would buy at tsc/ orschelns or your local farm and home store. Was it on a spreader??? It is possible. Your probably ok getting it.

Slip clutches tend to bind together over time, especially when stored outside. They seldom are "exercised". Another member noted the purpose, to protect the gear box. Would be prudent to check the release tension before each use. Not sure how that would be done except back adjustment bolts to zero, then slowly add tension to desired resistance.

Shafts are graded based on their use/rating. A light shaft on a heavy attachment is more likely to fail under stress. If it seems light to you find the rating vs. implement requirement range and double-check.
