I'm building a room in my barn with sliding horse stall style doors. I'm still in the planning phase, don't want to put the walls up and find out my doors won't work. Does the door hardware generally push the door far enough away from the wall for the door to slide? Some things I'm reading make it sound like a header board is needed to get some extra distance. I'm starting to think I should build the door before I build the room so I can see how it all works.

All of the sliding stall doors that I've ever used or seen have had an upper and lower steel track. The lower track can be a guide that will keep the door properly vertical... and keep the door in place if the horse kicks it, leans up against it or goes for a roll.

I have used rails and hangers from National Hardware. Rail bolts to wall. I used 1.5" metal square tubing for the doors. You could use dimensional lumber. The hangers can have offset bolts to let you tweak how far away fro the wall the dors hang. The header is just an easy way to mount the rails. You want the rails mounted to a surface that is not going to significantly compress.

Just download this pdf that has drawings. http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/content/S...dcommericalclidingdoorcatalog_stanleynational

Most folks in this area mount the sliding door rail to the header board so the door hangs straight down. If the stationary part of the stall is mounted to the face of the posts, that will leave about a 1/2" gap from the face to the inside of the door. A bottom stay roller will keep the door from being pushed out.

Generally you build the door to the opening size, not the other way around. The door sits proud of the surface so clearances are not a problem. If you case out the openings with 2x's you might need to pad out the door track, but again this is easily done.

Morton built my stables. The doors are flush with the walls.

I built my own doors, and hung them using Cannon Ball track. These doors easily weigh 125#+, and you can move them with one finger.

Do note the header the track mounts to, and also the bolts the doors hang from. The previous posting shows them better. They have a kink in them, so as to adjust them away from the wall face.

Ok... Ok... now... show us the 'post cribbing' shots.

Those look great! My horses would have them seasoned in no time.

One caution, don't use pine for the wood as the ponies kinda like to chew away at any exposed edges.
That or protect exposed edges with metal capping.
Stalls I made used hemlock which was OK but any pine was all chewed up.
Horses were Arabian if that makes a difference.(might be a trait)
