Hi All,
I have had problems wits a nasty skunk living under a 40 ft storage container behind my shop.My dogs seem to get sprayed often as they aren't smart enough to know thats not a cat there chasing.I finally decided to get a live trap and trap him.Acording to articles I have read on the internet you can cover the cage with a blanket to keep the skunk calm enough to load the cage and relocate him.Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!! So now I have a live skunk in a cage. What am I to do now?I took a rope tied a hook on the end, masking taped it to the end of a 12ft piece of pvc pipe.carefully hooked the end of the cage drug it out all the while the skunk is spraying.after pondering all my options,What are my options?

I've found skunks spray after covering the trap with a blanket about 50% of the time.

My advice: Cover the trap. Baptize it as soon as possible.

STAY com cover cage{you did}. I have taken skunks in garbage pails no lid and walked them out into the woods tiped pail and stood there while skunk walked out. I have also walked upto and with skunks helping them off the road. I even helped a mother with her babies cross a road.

PLEASE, DON'T kill the little guy if there is no need. Skunks are awsome rodent control and overall very harmless. Some folks even have them as pets. I don't understand the mentality with KILL KILL KILL :(

I agree you do not have to kill the skunk, but you don't have to dump it onto your neighbor either. I really hate people that do that. Had a person dumping out a woodchuck in my backfield area one time. I caught him in the act and forced him to take the thing away. He couldn't understand why I was so mean......................!

I trapped two skunks that were determined to dig a den under my front stoop. I used a plastic cover for a now defunct grill to cover the trap both times and then used my pole saw to hook the trap and drag it away from the house with the cover over it all the way. Since they didn't want to take no for an answer about digging under the stoop, I shot both from a safe distance after using the pole saw to pull off the cover Neither sprayed, though there was a bit of a smell where they were trapped. Putting the cover over the trap was a bit nerve wracking, but both skunks seemed pretty calm about the whole thing. I had to adjust the cover both times to get the trap completely covered, and I used the pole saw for that, too. Later on it occurred to me that I should have tied a rope to the trap before the skunk took up occupancy.

I've seen a plan for a skunk trap made of a piece of pvc drain pipe. The idea there is that the trap is small enough so that the skunk can't rear up into the spray position. I think it was just a piece of 6" or 8" pvc with screen on one end and a drop door at the other, with a simple trigger, that could be baited, tied to the door....kinda like the rabbit traps you can find plans for on the web.

When my wife and I moved my elderly mother in to live with us, she showed us some photos taken way back when. One of them was of me about five or six years old with my pet skunk.

My dad and his buddy used to go around to the local dumps way back when and catch skunks. The would shine a light in their eyes, grab them and throw them in a burlap sack. I don't know that they ever got sprayed or not? I can remember going out on these "excursions".

They would dope up the skunk with either and descent them then sell them to pet shops in the city of Philadelphia. I guess that they were poplular pets back in the fifties?

Something else worth mentioning. Dawn dishwashing detergent works about as well as anything if your dog or you get hit. I always keep a bottle of saline eye wash on hand too. Good for rinsing the eyes when your dog takes a direct hit.

I had forgotten but once a pal of mine had a skunk spray his dog right outside the open window of the house. The spray came in the house and boyoboy the whole place stank for ages!!!

You did good till the dragging part, you scared it and probably pinched it, so it sprayed, thats what they are programmed to do ,so gently cover and carry the next one and I bet your sinuses and family will thank you.

Number one rule is keep the wind to your back when dealing with skunks. You probably got that one figured out already, learning curve is usually pretty short.

Number 2 rule is have a plan for disposal before you set the trap, drowning is about the best for least chance of smell escaping .

I believe skunks are ranked # 2 for spreading rabies so keep that it mind.
The skunk has spread saliva all over the trap trying to escape so handle with care.

Have fun

I wouldn't kill the skunk.:(

I would try to give him a new address without getting sprayed.- Just cover the cage completely and the skunk can't spray you.

Where have you seen plans for making a PVC skunk trap?
I've looked on the internet and can't find any. I see the ready made trap for $59.00.
Thanks for your time!

My Dad years ago used to rattle off a speech something about " The skunk thunk the stump stunk" and that's all I remember. Anyone ever heard it?

you mean this:

a skunk sat on a stump, the skunk thunk the stump stunk and the stump thunk the skunk stunk so the stinking skunk got off the stinking stump

You should soak your blanket in water before you put it over the trap and it will keep the scent in of he decides to spray. Block up any dig outs to prevent future guests. Skunk populations can get out of hand pretty quick so I keep them thinned out. They can be hard on gambird eggs but they also dig out the ground bees so I don't mind having a few around.
