Greetings all-

Considering purchasing a stump grinder for a cat 289/299. Looking for opinions on buying new/used, brand pros/cons, hi flow/standard flow pros/cons, etc, also what size would be appropriate.
Have numerous stumps on my property and considering making a side business of it.
TIA

I've ran skid steers doing cutting and it seems like even with high flow the hydraulics lack power compared to PTO operated implements. The Woodland mills PTO powered unit looks like a great alternative to traditional stump grinders and would have lots of power.

I don't want to sound negitive but unless the Cat has breaks on the track drive only they can be a PITA. If the loader moves even on the slightest slope you are cutting to much and bogging the grinder or not cutting anything. That being said go for the hiflow and connect the lowflow to the ancilary lines. See if you can rent or demo one before buying. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

I have no problem holding mine on a slope either by park break or track drives.I could not find a stump grinder made for abuse or with out waiting for months for one to ship here so i built my own.I bleed off the high flow circuit for left right slew via elec valve as the low flow cannot be slowed down without creating heat in the circuit.I have had zero issues with my design and it gets alot of abuse.A 2m wide hardwood (bluegum)stump 400mm above ground to about the same underground with sharp greenteeth in about 11 min. That includes chasing root flare etc. This is on a terex so not sure on a cat.

Looking at the pic I am now running two hydraulic rams for slew rather than the cam over design in the picture after snapping two rams in half

Well picked up a CAT sg18 grinder for a pretty good deal. It's a hi flow and needs all 5 hookups my 289 has. Should be here next week.....

That unit really looks great! Which model Terex is that? I run a PT70 ... I've been considering buying a front mount grinder for mine. I have a rear 3pt unit for my tractor, which has been great... But I'm moving more and more of my tasks to the skid steer platform.

I'm interested to know how you end up liking the unit... Please update when you try it out.

I had an sg18. It was plenty powerful and the telescoping feature was nice. When I switched back to all Bobcat loaders, I bought the Bobcat stump grinder. it is bulky but I routinely take on 4ft diameter hard oak stumps (dry) and it does just fine and my teeth get beat up a lot in the rock here. I've had only a few issues (wire cutting motor seals) and broken stock teeth and one busted line in 8 years. Again it's bulky but I like that it contains my chips.
