Hi All
I'm looking into planting a large area of giant bamboo in Zambia for biomass. To get the highest yields I need to plant as close together as possible, which in my area is about 3m between rows. The gap between rows will eventually be about 1.5m once the bunches are ready to harvest.
To harvest the bamboo I need to find a feller buncher or something similar that can cut the culms, and drop them into the "road"
Normal feller bunchers like the John Deere are 2.9m wide, so they just wont fit down the row
Tree sheers on a skidsteer work ok, but the sheering action shatters the culms and causes disease.
I'm trying to find someone who manufactures a feller buncher that will fit onto a skid steer - it doesn't have to lift a massive amount - the bamboo culms are light compared to trees, even when you grab a few at a time. It really needs a saw to cut cleanly, and grab arms to hold the culms and move them out of the clump.
Bobcat used to make them, but doesn't any more.
If anyones seen something similar please let me know or I'll have to start building!
