Hello all... just curious if anyone knows a good way to keep down the mosquitos. we are in SE Michigan farm country and they can be murdurous(sp?)

By good way I mean environmentally friendly and cheap!
We have heard of an inexpensive skeeter trap that they use in 3rd world countries that uses dry ice. Anyone know about this?

Any help would be great before we all are sucked dry this summer.

Appreciate the feedback... I have a few products like that that will repel anything including your friends and family, but what we are looking for is something for the property... like a safe fogger, trap, etc. etc....

thanks again

The best way to keep skeeters down is to eliminate thier breeding grounds. Get rid of any standing water, like old tires with water in them, buckets, etc. While in boot camp at Paris Island, we used Avon Skin-So-Soft mixed with Cutters repelant to keep the skeeters and sand fleas from eating us alive.

I agree. When we lived in Singapore, we were surprised to find out that it was against the law to have any kind of standing water on your property. This includes the saucers under your flower pots. The neighbors will turn you in to the "mosquito police". Fortunately, they are pretty understanding for first offences for foreigners. It seems to work, there are almost no mosquitos. This is pretty amazing considering that its a very small island about 50 miles north of the equator. The locals get pretty nervous when they think about the diseases from these things.

I saw something advertised in the Northwest Airlines catalog (on my last flight in March) - a mosquito attractor/trap that ran off propane. The said it generated carbon dioxide and heat (like the mosquito's prey), and then vacuumed them into the trap. I don't have any experience with these units, but with my aversion to "skeeters" I thought it might be worth a try. They suggested using it early in the season to keep the early population down, decreasing the geometric growth in the mosquito population and a resulting drop the rest of the season.

Attached is a link to a mosquito trap like the one mentioned in the above post. It uses propane and a scent lure to trap and kill mosquitos. I know they tested these in the salt marshes of Cape May NJ and collected pounds of mosquitos. Apparently they work very well.

These look pretty interesting, but pretty expensive. If anybody has one of these, please post your experience.

I agree. they are quite high on the money scale and I have not heard if they work or not. All great feedback though.

A neighbor said he had heard of one that could be home built with dry ice.
Any one hear of this?
I hadn't, but I'll try anything once......twice if it feels good

I have had a Mosquito Magnet ( http://www.ambiophysics.com/ ) running for a little over two days now.

We have not entered mosquito season yet in southern NH and have just started black fly season. (I had seen two black flies and one mosquito so far this year.)

I checked the trap when it had been running for 48 hours. There were over 100 black flies in the trap!

So far (with very little experience) I am impressed with the Mosquito Magnet.
