Looking to ad a 3rd function remote. I have two pumps, steering at 2.6 gpm and main at 5.0 gpm. Yes that is what I have. total of 7.6 combined. Equal to about two chipmunks and a crippled squirrel.

Surplus has a valve listed that is 6.6 gpm for 59.00, only downside I see is the ports are #4.

Would it be better to go with something with more flow rate or would this be ok for a 3rd.

It'll be on the main circuit not the steering one, which is separate. So it only needs to be large enough for 5 gpm.

Any thoughts on the #4 port size?

It can be rated at 6.6GPM but at what pressure drop or loss?

The #4 is too small. Look up a hydraulic nomograph chart on google, very easy to use. Like this one

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.es...t that valve off the chart at your flow rate.

Won't matter for a third function that is used for intermittent use like operating a cylinder.

But is it in an open center hydraulic system?
And where is the 3rd function in the circuit?

Are the in and out #4 also or just the work ports? If just the work ports it well ok. Put a link to the valve you are looking at.

I think the valve the OP is looking at is a "diverter" valve, not a true 3rd function solenoid valve (this is where links to the products your asking about helps). Since your only "diverting" the dump/curl circuit, I think it's fine. I would not put a small valve like that in the the main flow from the pump.

Won't matter for a third function that is used for intermittent use like operating a cylinder.

But if it's a true "3rd function", then it has all of the pumps flow going through it all the time so it needs to be sized properly.

Sorry should have provided more information. Yes, this is just a selector or diverter valve. After some of the questions I realized I was assuming that my system had larger lines to begin with than what it has. My lines and cylinders are already #4.

This valve was attractive for a couple of reasons

1. The compact size
2. Built in tapped ports
3. $

I'm going to try insert a couple links to the valve and the manufacturers specs.

may have to copy and paste?

Maybe someone more apt can fix it
