Hey Y'all!

Well, we had another successful day ride of picking up ol' stuff, lots of ol' metal parts and an' ol' Ford garden tractor and just a hodge podge of miscellaneous farm stuff. A couple of pieces we picked up were these two "single" acting hydraulic arms and my question is, what exactly does one use a single acting arm for?

thanks for help,
Steve

and last one

I kinda feel like a squirrel gathering nuts for the winter. With all this material we've been accumulating and all the projects we've got planned my summer and winter is going to be very interesting, at least that's what the wife is telling me /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Most of the time, single-acting cylinders are used to lift things up such as the head on mower conditioners. Gravity is used to let it back down.
I wish that you were closer, I sure would like to have a garden tractor like that to make a mini puller out of.

we used single acting cylinder for our skid steer loader. doesn't have down pressure, but with the geometry, it digs fine

IN the early days FELs commonly had single acting cylinders.

?farm hand? on the early International wheel tractors was one. Used my neighbor's plowing snow back in the 70s. Annoying as all get out as I wanted down pressure a few times.

I don't think you'd want one of those Jerry. I bought one new when Ford first came out with them. I was impressed by all of the zerk greasable fittings, and it looked quality built. Problem was it was sooo underpowered I had to cut my lawn in low gear, very slow. I finally sold it after a couple years of excruciating slow lawn mowing and got a chepo K-Mart mower with a twin cyl. 18 hp horizontal Briggs engine. I still have it, and it cuts the highest grass as fast as I dare go! Don't know what the Ford folks were thinking when they made those anemic machines.

It would have to have a new modified motor to get into the class that I would like to run in. Weeeeeeeee fun spending money.

THOSE cylinders were used to raise the front mount cultivators
on a farmall H or M , they are not very big but worked great for what it was intended for.
