I have a 10 year 8hp snowthrower that needs the belt tensioner spring replaced, if anyone has done this can this be done thru the belt cover or does the guts all need to be taken out to do this job Ive tried doing it and almost had success but just cant quite pull spring end into the hole. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Its been a good machine other than its on its 4th friction disk, now this broken spring, /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gifits nothing to have snow 4 feet high and 8 feet across the end of my driveway so its moved a lot snow in 10 years here in New Hampshire. At the time only the heavy duty models were around and I liked the channel iron shaped handles.

i got one of those. i just replaced the spring a few weeks back. it was the idler pulley closest to the engine... went to the hardware store and got a spring the same size, just a tad heavier. now the fun part is getting the bugger on... i took the plastic belt cover, and the bottom pan off to do it...
i winched the machine from the handle to get it in the air a bit. i put the spring into the hole at the idler, then a large screwdriver to push it down to where it anchors...
it's good to have an xtra pair of hands helping from the underside.. it's a tight fit, and a real pain, and you'll call it many names.. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif boy those traction wheels dont last very long... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So it can be done! It shows in the manual to strip everything but I dont want to do that, I just put in a friction disk three weeks ago, I just want to sneak it that spring, I will try again tomorrow morning and let you all know how I did. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

yes, it can be done... it's not an easy one, but 2 people on it helps. i went out in the garage and checked the model#. it's a 560, same as yours, just a smaller engine. i got a 5 hp diesel engine that i am going to put on it, the 5hp tecumseh works ok, but the added torque of the diesel will be nice when working in 5th gear in deep snow. got the spring cheap too. the dealer probably charges alot more, for the same spring.. remember to take the idler pulley off before you start. it makes it alot easier to get down in there... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif let us know how you make out......rick /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup, I did it last nite and it only took two minutes, I took a two foot bar of 3/8 steel machined a groove on it at work to hold the spring from sliding around and pryed it over to the aluminum piece then used a large screwdriver to get it in the hole all done from the belly pan side. The spring only was $4.88 at the dealer and I do think that Simplicity parts have been reasonable. Now Im happy I dont have to wrench on that thing all week end, thanks for the replies! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have the same problem I can see where the spring goes into the idle arm hole but where do I connect the other end of the spring.
I've looked at the simplicity manual and it doesn't show where to connect.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have a simplicity Model # 1691899 serial # 4162 Part # 1727149SM
thanks
