Simplicity legacy 54 inch deck issue

I’ve got a 2000 simplicity legacy diesel with a 54” deck. I broke the deck belt while I was mowing, so I went and got a belt, but it was 1 inch shorter. It worked good until the tensioner arm broke. Would a shorter belt cause it to break? And input would be appreciated!
