I recently purchased a 1984 Simplicity 7790 diesel garden tractor. It has a Lombardini 18HP engine. The owners manual calls for 40W oil of CD service class (DS series 3) . I have had no luck finding ANY straight 40W oil. The only straight weight oil I can find is 30W. Can Multi viscosity oils be used in these old engines. I emailed Lombardini and haven't gotten an answer. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I sure don't want to use anything that would damage the engine. Thanks....Nick

Well there's no oil out today that would "damage" your engine, that API classification of oil is long gone and a oil of today will work perfectly fine.

if it requires a 40w you can use any diesel HDEO 5w40 0r 15w40 depending on if the unit is used in the winter?

a multi grade oil listed above is still a 40w when at op temp so it'll work, todays oil's are leaps ahead of yesterdays oil.

Check this thread for a discussion about a similar engine's oil needs. I'd guess RTS 5-40 or 10-30 would be the cat's whiskers for that unit...
