I have a simplicity 616 Yoeman small field tractor that I have modified alot over the years.
when I got the tractor with a donner riding lawn mower i started to make this one work.

it did not have a motor but the donner had a B&S 12.5 electric start motor that I put on it. and it runs well for the last few years.

but now the tranny seems to be losing it's ablilty to stay in gear when I have it in low range.
if I put the tranny in high range it will shift fine. but the tractor flies around the yard. which is way too fast.

if I put it in low range when I go to shift from reverse to forward it gets jammed between gears. and now reverse seems to miss engagement?

I would really like to find an exploded view of the tranny but I'm not sure where to look.

any help would be great and I thank you in advance!

Not sure if you are familiar with this website Yeoman

Gives some info on your tractor and may provide a lead to the info you need. Sounds to me like this tractor came with a 6hp B&S engine, upgrading to the 12.5hp may have been too much for the transmission. Good luck with your problem, hope ya get 'er fixed.

thanks for the reply

it does help some and I have been searching the daigrams but I can't find my transmission.

most are shown with the drive pulley attached to the input shaft.

but mine had another assembly on the outside of the pulley that allows you to shift into high range.
giving you 4 forward gears and reverse. this trans is concidered a 5 speed

all the daigrams I have searched look like they don't have this drum thing that slides in and out of the pulley assembly.

well,
I did find out that I have a low speed kit on mine which was an option if you ordered it.
so the exploded views of the transmissions are of a standard transmission.

so I guess the only way I will figure out what is going on with the shifting is to open it up and see what makes it tick!

Unless I'm mistaken about what specific tractor you have -- if the machine shifts OK in the high speed range, the problem is not inside the transmission. The problem is in the two-speed driven pulley that's connected to the input shaft on the transmission. That's what's called a "high-low" pulley, and was an optional item. The problem could be something as simple as the adjustment on the belt guides or the pulley being loose on the input shaft, or it could be internal to that driven pulley itself...

that is what I was thinking KentT
but I really would like to see an exploded view of it.

but the views I have seen is all of standard gear boxes.

so I guess it will be a slow and painful exploratory surgery taking it apart and seeing what makes it tick.
and trying to find out why it works one way and now not the other.

well,
today I got the chance to play a little with the tranny and i found that the high/low range drive does not come out easily. so i pulled the screws that hold it together and founf the planetary gears very dry.
so I pumped it full of grease and put it back together. but while I was doing that I found a lock bushing on the inside of the drive pulley next to the trannny case. it wasn't loose, but did look like it had moved out of position.

so after shifting things around and getting it all lined up again I got it set and gave it a ride.
now it's raining here so I couldn't give it much of a test but it did shift correctly and did not slip between gears while testing so I think I got it for now.

thanks!

I wish it was in better condition then it is in, but it does the job. I'm slowly fixing things to make it better but it is far from stock and that does make it hard to keep things working sometimes.
