Silt Scoop

Anyone know how to use one of these? I believe it is a silt scoop but the person I got it from hadn't used it and doesn't know how its used.

I am hoping I can use it to maintain some dams that have not been cleaned out for a long time.

Anyone got ideas as to how to use it?

Yes. I've seen many "scoops" almost like that. However they all had a metal bottom. They were a part of a drag line operation. Most normally used to build or clean out silt from some form of impoundment. Also used in various types of mining operation.

The pictures show that the unit you have does not have a bottom. You would not be able to drag and lift material collected from something - such as a pond or dam.

The operations I've seen have this scoop attached to a very large crane or to an overhead drag line.

Does that back tip forward? Just curious if you drag it through a pond or ditch and then tip back up to empty or spread the silt.

Agree looks similar to drag line bucket without a bottom.

The back tips forward. I just got told by someone who remembers his family used them way back to clean the silt out of a dam/pond. He said they used 2 tractors, one pulling it via a cable forward to collect the load, the flap gets pulled up to empty it then the other tractor, that is hooked up by cable to the back of the scoop drags it back through the dam/pond in preparation for the next drag forward. The flap also allows the backwards pulling tractor to drag it back empty without too much resistance. I think the reason that it doesnt have the bottom on it is so that it doesnt dig in to the clay bottom of the dam. Kinda similar to a box blade without the blade or rippers.
