Some time ago, I noticed quite a number of silicone bakeware items in Bed, Bath & Beyond. Although I was curious, I didn't try any of it. But since our cornbread muffins sometimes stick in the muffin pans we're using, I decided to try the silicone muffin pan, only to find that our local Bed, Bath & Beyond stores no longer stock it (although some is still on their website).

Everything I've found on the Internet, reviews and such, indicate it's great stuff. But if it's so great, why do none of the stores have it. I've been looking for a week or two and can't find it anywhere. Most of the places on the Internet that sell it didn't have the dimensions, so I wasn't sure they'd be a size we wanted. But today I found some of the right size at Overstock.com and ordered them.

I should have asked here before I ordered. Does anyone have experience with this stuff, and if so, how good is it?

Hey Bird:

We have a bread pan that for most part works but does not hold it's form. as the bread rises the sides fall out and it becomes more of a football shaped loaf than rectangular. it is not NON-STICK either... I forget what she made in it that pretty much tore off the bottom getting it out. I much prefer the corning wear glass stuff for most baking needs or the Correll wear crockery stuff. the steel/tin stuff works ok for a while but stay away from the Teflon stuff between research and long term issues I'm cautious on it, not much more sure on the silicone stuff as it is a rather harsh chemical make up.

Not sure if the cupcake forms will hold its shape well or not though...

The stone baking sheet we have is nice too but I prefer crisper crust than it provides.

Linda says, its Ok, but not great. If you want muffins that release get a Pampered Chef, stoneware pan, and season it properly. Or Cast Iron and grease properly. She sites the lack of form in the baked goods in the silicone also. And is also concerned about the chemical makeup of the silicone ware.

Bird:

When the wife was thinking about buying one I did a little research. The pinch test was mentioned the most by posters as a way of testing prior to making a purchase. The pinch test according to posters is the bending or flexing of the product to see if the bend or flex line shows white. If it shows white it is not 100 percent silicone and will stink when in use baking items. One individual advised he checked the ones at Bed – Bath and Beyond and they failed the pinch test.

The ones I looked at on Amazon.Com (Red) advised they were 100 percent silicone. I have not made a purchase yet, waiting for more people to use and voice pro’s and con’s.

we have bread loaves and muffin pans. got them at some sort of dollar store to try out.

they work as advertised. better on the muffins than the bread .. but they do work.

I believe places like subway use them almost exclusively for bread baking..

No hands on knowledge, but the wife has used them for years for cornbread. She still uses some sort of spray,I think. Hers are made to fit inside a metal pan. That way they hold shape and are easy to handle.

That i beleive is a formed "silpat" that they use at subway. Silpat is a silicone baking mat used in baking.

I bought some silicone baking sheets and i think muffin thing last big order i think i made a year ago at agri-supply. I gave them to the wife for christmas last year. They do work and some stuff sticks to them but not all the time. We use mostly the baking sheet, but not as much cause it dont stand up in the dishwasher like the hard baking sheets i got at Chefs (catalouge). We dont hand wash anything really so we really just use the hard pans as you have to put them under the silicone anyway.

+1 on stoneware from pampered chef. We have some silicon forms but not use it much. Hehe, I use the form from my grandma the most - ceramic 90 years old.

We have a son-in-law who has a sister who is a Pampered Chef peddler. Naturally, our daughter says it's great stuff and my wife has bought a few items, but I haven't seen any reason to be impressed with their stuff. I know some folks say you get what you pay for, so I guess if that's true, it must be great simply because it costs so much.
