I tried doing a search for this and came up with over 1800 threads. :confused2: We are getting ready to side our new garage and want to use the same finish that will be going on the log home that we are building next. The garage will be a mix of fir logs, pine live-edge siding and cedar shakes in the gables. Does anybody have experience with Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding stain? We are thinking Butternut but may go a shade lighter. I know it is expensive and will have to recoat every 5 years or so, but what about the performance. Peeling? Mold and mildew? We have also looked into Perma-chink. Better, same or worse?

No experience with that particular product, but I used Sikkens Cetol DEK on my patio. It's pretty good, but in my opinion, not worth what it cost, and of course it's an oil based product that's more trouble to use and clean up afterwards that some water based products that work just as well. With Sikkens, I'd be very much surprised if you don't need to recoat in 2 years instead of 5.

I used Sikkens on our camp, but it was when they had Citgo 1-2-3. Sikkens has discontinued the 1-2-3. And now offer a new blend that is all in one coat covering, so They say. I purchased one gallon to finish up the new porch we did but the price is $84.00 a gallon. It is good stuff, but I am not sure it is worth that much. We did the staining of the camp 9 years ago and it still looks great. At that time we went through around 50 gallons. First coat was the actual stain and the to cover / finish coats.

We used the 1 -2- 3 system on lots of projects we built and it worked extremely well. It was well worth the money. I have no experience with the newer versions.
