i am looking into buying a rear finish mower for my Agco ST30x would a rear discharge mower be better than a side discharge

I have heard the rear discharge are nicer because they don't clog as easily (all blowing out the back instead of all to one side) and you don't get the grass rows. I have a side discharge and I am fine with that but I'm not one of those people seeking the perfect lawn. Heck, most of my "lawn" is crabgrass and weeds.

I've had both (rear discharge and side discharge).
I have No preferance. One works and mows just as well as the other in my opinion..

I liked the rear discharge mower I had before getting a ZTR.

my 72" MMM side discharges and rows it fairly bad.

I pulled the shoot up when i was cutting thicker stuff and it helps to kick it out farther but still will ball up on thick heavy stuff.

its just a lot of grass to have to move from all the way on the left to the right.

IF i had a choice i think id go rear discharge. also less likely hood of shooting a rock or something out and taging something next to the tractor.

I also like to discharge to the already mowed side so im not moving even MORE clippings which can dictate which way you mow, the the rear discharge you dont have to keep in mind which direction to run to try to avoid that.

The RD will not clog. A SD can clog, especially if the grass is wet. I have used my RD to mow some VERY tall grass and it has never clogged.

The RD does not have the added width of the chute but it is usually longer than a SD.

I would say the main reason to consider a SD is if you are planning on adding a material handling system. Even with a SD RFM, you could rig one of the following trailers to it for picking up grass clippings or leaves.

The Cyclone Rake
DR® Power Equipment - Leaf & Lawn Vacuum

When I was demo-ing different tractor brands I also tested side- and rear-discharge RFM. For me it was no contest and we ended up getting a rear discharge for the reasons mentioned above, mostly the wadding up and windrows if you're not cutting regularly
