Shredder Painting Project

I have a Howse 5' Shredder that is rusting badly on top of the deck. I was planning on removing all of the attachment hardware and using a wire wheel on a grinder to remove all of the surface rust, then priming and repainting it Kioti orange. Can anyone tell me if painting over the original paint will be a problem, or will I absolutely have to remove all of the old paint before repainting? I'm sure it will be quite difficult to remove all of the paint around the gear box hardware, cooling fins, etc.

I did just that to mine, Howse 5' brush cutter. I wire brushed all the rust and filled the rust holes with my MIG welder and painted and It looks real nice now

All you have to do is remove any loose paint and rust. Prime these areas and rough up the rest of the paint. I'd also clean the surface with a damp cloth with thinner to make sure you have any grease off. Then paint and have fun.

Prior to painting, after all the prep is done, wipe the entire surface with a paint prep product, not thinner. You can get it in quart size containers at any automotive paint supply store. It removes all oil, including fingerprints, and other contaminants that may prevent your paint from sticking. Take my word for it, it is worth it.

Good suggestions from the other guys. I'll add one more. Use Rust Reformer (Rustoleum product; similar ones available from NAPA and others) to inert the rust (iron oxide) to black iron sulfide. You can paint right over it. This is the only product that will completely inert the rust so that it won't break out through your new paint later on.

I did this on a Gravely snow plow and a Gravely rotary plow and on a JD soil ripper. No new rust on any of those (but the Gravely stuff is gone from my place now).
