I am looking to buy a small tractor this year. I am set on a JD tractor. I want the drive-on belly mower option, a front loader, and a bushhog. My home is approx 2 acres but I have a creekside cabin on 6 wooded acres. I will do exceptional maintenance with my mind set on passing this tractor onto my son. Do you have suggestions about either the 1000 or 2000 series? Thank you!:newhere:

UPDATE = I am interested in the Sub-Compact and Compact Utility Tractors, not the LT mowers.

I have both a SCUT and a CUT... While the smaller tractor is quite capable, I wish it were at least the same size as the CUT. I hit the limits of that smaller tractor rather quickly.

I agree with techwrtr2 in that all of those mentioned 1000 to 2000 series are small enough that the 2032R would be my choice for multi purpose work.

I use an x749 and 4520 compact for my mowing and tractor chores and sometimes wish for something bigger.

I agree 100% with everyone here. While the 1 series would be fine around the house you'll quickly find it's limitations in the wooded lot.

I think it depends what you want to do in the wooded acreage. What do you have in mind?

If it's just to haul occasional firewood like I do, a CUT would be overkill, though not much more expensive than a SCUT. The key is if you want one tractor to do all, or can afford two - one for your yard, the other for heavy work.

If you can't afford two, then you must decide based on your usage. Look out for CUT's mowing slopes.

There are lots of people on here using a 3x20 series for mowing. Unless you want your yard to be a "putting green" they are not a bad compromise. Within certain limitations a small tractor will do the same jobs as a larger one. Look at "ground clearance." Look at FEL lift capacity. Look at PTO capabilities. Set minimal acceptable standards that would be acceptable. The results will point you in the direction you need to look. For example if you never want to lift anything over 1,000lbs a smaller machine might fit the bill, but if 2,000lbs is maximum, then that's another category. Is a 4' Bush Hog suitable or do you want 6' and cut the time in half?

Look at the weather where you live. Based on heat / cold would you ever decide a CAB is required? How much are you willing to spend. Would you rather have smaller new or larger used, if on a tight budget?

If you do a good honest self analysis, the answer should be fairly obvious.

buy the biggest tractor you can afford...it's cheaper that way.

When shopping for my 2720 I started by measuring my storage shed and then bought the largest tractor that would fit. I have been very satisfied. :)

I have owned 1000 & 2000 Series John Deere compact tractors. Of the current models, I now have a 1026R without a loader, in the past I have owned a 2320 (now a 2025) with a loader & a 2720 (now a 2032) with a loader. Also in the past I owned a 2210 (pre 1026R) with a loader.

My favorite tractor with a loader was the 2320 (2025). The 2320 (2025) is a lot more of a loader tractor than the 1000 series & is still a nice mower tractor.

The 2720 (2032) was not that much more of a loader tractor than the 2320 (2025) for the high cost difference, it was also not as good of a mower tractor as the 2320 (2025).

I buy the smallest tractor that'll still work. Started with a Gravely. Didn't do enough.

Went next to an 18.5 hp 4010 (if they made a 2019S, that would be its equivalent now). It was great except that the FEL action was a tad slow, and the 3 ph lift wasn't quite high enough. JD remedied both of these in the 1025R, but they downrated the loader a bit in lift capacity.

The 1025 has a driver-over and self install feature for a belly mower. Not sure this is on the 2000 series. I saw a 2025 in Columbus, OH state fair. Seems its main addition to the 1025 is the dual brakes like I had on the 4010. Probably more lift capacity on FEL and 3ph.

I find the 1025 overpowered. Don't need a tractor that never bogs down. That's silly. Like buying a V8 car/pickup. Unless you need that huge amount of power, you're running around wasting nature's resources using too much fuel. If I bogged on the 4010 (rare), I'd just back off and try it slower or take a smaller bite.

What's your hurry?

Ralph
