shortening a pto shaft

Before I ruin a good shaft, what is the procedure for cutting a pto shaft to the correct length? How much overlap do you need. Do you measure the length needed from implement to pto when the implement is up or down or does it matter?

1. don't cut off any more than you have to, that will insure adequate overlap.
2. cut equal amounts off each shaft.

Normally attach the equipment to the tractor then position the pto near the tractor pto shaft and measure from the end of the pto to the end of the pto shaft. (pto shaft fully compressed) then cut this ammount plus and extra inch from each end of the seperated pto shaft.
