Everytime I go to use my BX2200 for mowing with belly mower I have this ach in the gut as I have to partially engage the PTO clutch to get things spinning a little and then grind the PTO selector into mid PTO position. Try to grind as little as possible but without spinning the gears it's like there are no synchros or whatever. Could break the lever off pulling and it will not go without a little grind. What the heck am I doing wrong? Tractor only has about 31 hours on it.

DrDan,

There is no synchro (that I know of). If the gears aren't in the "correct" position when you try to engage the PTO, then the lever will be hard to move (if not impossible).

The way to get the lever to move and the PTO to engage smoothly is to clutch it a couple times w/o moving the lever. Each time you push in the clutch, try moving the PTO (easy does it) into gear. Once the gears line up properly, the lever should just slide into engagement (with the clutch pushed in).

I have not had any trouble shifting the pto on my BX when I have tried it however I don't have much need to anyway since the only attachments I have use the mid-pto. You might want to check the linkage under the fender for lubrication or interference. By the way for those of you who may not realize this, the BX has no clutch pedal. Only an internal hydralic clutch for the pto drive which is actuated by a lever on the fender.

LOL Hey Glue Guy I think I need to grind a little bevel on the gears. I have tried putting the PTO in an out of gear several times and move the PTO selector to mid and to no avail. I think it is just new and tight. Like I say maybe a little bevel on the gears so they pop in better.

I had this problem when brand new. Eventually PTO selector was really messed up. Dealer took it back and adjusted and it has been smooth as silk ever since.

I'll get it looked at. 50 hour service is coming up soon. "Dis ain't right" for a new tractor. I'm starting to have a "love - Hate" relationship with this tractor. Never had so many leaks and little problems with a Kubota. My other one ran purrfect and still is after 6 years and 600 hours. I guess with the demand for the BX the quality suffers to fill orders.

DrDan, have you tried selecting either the mid level or rear PTO before engaging the PTO clutch? That is what I do, and have never had a problem. Also, I always leave the mid PTO selected as I seldom use my rear pto, but occasionally, will engage it just to ensure it still works.

in my humble opinion u should not be having that kind of problem with only 31 hrs. i would advise u let the dealer take care of it. those kind of things should be checked out before the dealer delivers the tractor to u. the buyer should not have to be making adjustments on a new machine. just my thoughts.

The PTO gears are not synchromesh, it is needed to rotate the gears by clutching them with the PTO engagement handle or get off the tractor, turn off the engien and rotate the shafts by hand if it is stubborn when new. Perhaps an adjustment can be made but I suspect--new, stiff tractor and new owner operator error.
The leaks--what is leaking?, I am at 215 hours, no leaks even enough to collect dust!
Good luck, hope they get it fixed up for you. J

I've also never had a problem engaging my PTO. One dumb thing I did see when the tractor was demonstrated to me at one dealership - the sales guy thought that the diff-lock was a clutch. Each time he hit it and tried to engage the PTO there would be grinding noises. Don't ask me what was going on in combination there - the tractor was stationary - but the noise was awful.

Otherwise, only advice is to make sure you don't shift the PTO (rear, rear/mid, mid) selector unless all shafts have stopped spinning.
