Hello,I have a 80's Ford 1200 4x4 that will not start. The engine is a Shibaura 2 Cyl diesel. I rebuilt the engine completely, checked the timing and it's correct and it seams to be getting enough fuel.after bleeding the injectors i pulled the glow plugs and cranked it over.it has a good mix of fuel coming out of both cyl.i heat the glow plugs for 30 seconds, crank it over it only has white smoke coming out of the exaust, will not even try to start.i rebuilt the starter but it still turns slow.could the slow starting be the problem?should i try to pull start it?

Ford 1200 is light enough to pull start easily. I'll go that route if I'm forced to. You said that you overhauled it completely, can you go in to details a bit. You said that you "checked the timing". What timing are you talking about?, Hopefully you mean fuel oil timing. How did you do your valve timing and did you set valve lash adjustment? Being diesel, as long as fuel injection is timed right, valves are timed right you should be pretty close to get it started. If you have issues with injectors like not being able to have a good spray pattern will cause hard start or no start. Give us a bit more info and we may be able to help.

JC,

p.s. Shibaura is by the way Japanese and you could have posted your question in Ford section. I reckon you could get more hits that way.

Hey JC, to start with when i got the tractor it had a broke clutch housing,it is the magnesium type.so i had it welded because i could not find one.i figured i would rebuild the engine since i had it apart.all new bearings, pistons, valves and seals and even a new injector cam, total rebuild. injector timing, valve timing is set with aligning the marks on the gears with the crankshaft.i set valve lash to spects with the manual.i did a homemade test on the injectors by removing them from the engine, then hooking them back to the injector line then spinning the motor over to see what the spray looked like {and my wife calls me a redneck???} fuel spray looks even and very fine

james,

Great. Every thing that I wanted to hear.:) All my colegues at work say, although I don't sound like your run of the mill, typical redneck, but I'm certainly a "born redneck" and then some.:D. There are two marks on the crankshaft pulley that you can verify that injector opening up during the suction stroke for each piston. I figure that you have done that and you are confident of fuel timing by visual inspection. If that is that is the case and you followed the directions and lined up the markings on camshaft , crankshaft, fuel pump sprockets and idler gear then I just can not see any possibility of incorrect valve timing. How about your fuel ? is it fresh? how about the glow plug ? do you see visual indication that you that circuit works and heats up the little resistance element (glow plug indicator). I never actually felt or measured the glow plug temperature but when you took the glow plug out, did you turned on the circuit to see if it plug gets hot? By the way make sure you have no air in the injector line going to the injectors ( I know you checked the spray pattern... If all fails as you suggested I'd go ahead and pull start it. I do not like to see white smoke out of the exhaust pipe as it may be clue to getting anti freeze in the piston and burning it although you have not been able to start it yet.

Good luck, JC:)

JC,fuel is fresh but i think i'm going to drain it out and put fresh in.i also have a Kubota D640 in a cub cadeit that one time i filed it with fresh fuel i had just bought and it would not run till i drained it and put fresh fuel in from another store.my guess is down here in south carolina, the little mom and pop store might have a little water in their tank? i did the two marks on the crank again yesterday, and it's good.the glow plugs,i pulled them out and grounded them and they turned red hot.i know your not supposed to,but i thought i would fire it off before i filed it with antifreeze ,so when i filed it and something happened i would know were to look! and the injectors? man,i'm bleeding them in my sleep! but the starter turns real slow i think so i put new brushes and bushings.you know that they are $300. you have a sharp little tractor, you ever thought about putting a front end loader on it?

I hope that you'll get it started by new fuel and pulling. As far as loader for my 1700. I have looked in to it a bit but don't think I can justify it for the fact I do not have power steering and front wheel assist. I believe both are important specially for a CUT. Brand new loader will run me about $3000 that I think better spent toward a new rig. I will not get rid of my 1700 even if I buy a tractor with the loader and all. Ford 1700 is a great little tractor and does 90% of what I want very effectively. For now I just depend on my simple rear end loader( aka. scoop)

I know this is an old post BUT you might have put your pump in 360 degrees out . It sounds strange but you probably have a 720 degree cycle . Give the drive gear on the pump a full turn and try again .
