Just got a new ZTR this week, a Scag Wildcat. 61" deck with 26Hp Kawasaki liquid cooled engine. Cut my mowing time by over half. I was mowing with a Craftsman 42". Went from 3 hours down to just under an 1 1/2 hrs. I also mowed down by the pond and it had only been mowed twice this year and about 3 acres of my horse pasture. I set it at about 5" for this but it was still quite tall and heavy in places. I was truly impressed at the way it mowed the heavy stuff. I have been looking for quite awhile and finally decided to get one. Hopefully it will be the last one I buy.

You won't be disappointed. I have mowed more often, more places, and more happily than I ever have this year. They are probably overkill for a simple residential setup like ours, but so are a lot of things I guess. Mowing the pastures has been a breeze and done more like it should have been. I tend to do more that offers less resistance! Congratualtions on your purchase.

Dan, Just wait til you get a few more hours under your belt you can probably trim a little more time off of that :D ...

I started by cutting my time in half but now I can cut even faster if need be... Ahhh Grasshopper when man and machine become ONE!!??
hehe...:)

Congrats enjoy your SCAG!!

I was debating between Grasshopper and Scag but went with Scag because the dealer was about 20 miles closer and he seems like a decent fellow. He brought a mower out for me to try. The Grasshopper dealer would too but I wanted to stay closer to home if possible. I did test a Grasshopper in the lot for a couple of minutes. I am sure I would have been happy with it too.

Well actually I was refering to "grasshopper" as in the Kung-fu series when kane was being taught by the Kung-fu Master... He always referred to Kane as "grasshopper" and becoming One with the your inner being yadayadayada..

Maybe you are to young to have seen this series in which case You too can be a grasshopper....:D

Well that one went over my head. No I am not too young. Used to watch that show myself.

Dirtydan,

I'm sure you won't regret getting the Scag. I bought the Wildcat, 25 Kawi air-cooled last year. Has done well and makes mowing almost fun.

I strongly considered a Hustler, but like you, chose Scag due to the location of the dealer and the fact that I have used this dealer for other equipment for years.

Guess I am showing my age, but I caught the grasshopper reference...

Zero turn is great but if you don't have a lot of circles to make, what is the point? A suitable mower in the same class will do wonders and still mow just as fast. A Sears Crapsman is for the suburbanite who has 1/4 acre lot and needs a lawnmower with a beerholder. Don't get me wrong, I have mowed many acres with a sears, but they are made to wear out and be replaced a lot more often than I want to work on one.
My Steiner was replaced by it's previous owner with zero turn Scabs and they like them better, but only due to the ability to mow closer around trees. My 525 will outmow them on open areas. If it won't, then I need to get the larger deck (up to 84") and go again.

Sandman,

I wouldn't put a zero turn mower in the same class as a Stiener 525, be it for mowing or anything else. Just as I wouldn't place a comercial zero turn in the same class as a Craftsman garden tractor (which I owned before my Scag). However, my Craftsman was a dedicated mower. Thant's what i bought it for and what I used it for. And it was a huge improvement for me over the 21" Snapper that it replaced. Cut my mowing time dramatically. Now, enter the Scag. Again, a dedicated mower. And, again, cut my mowing time dramatically, even though I don't have trees to mow around. And, I think that is the point that was being made. Not that the comercial zero turns are going to cut faster than any other machine under all conditions, but rather for those who replaced their traditional riding mower, the zero turn cut mowing times dramatically. Plus, they are fun to operate.

The zero turns can be fun to operate, no doubt. The Steiners that are like mine, that articulate in the middle are not as much fun, when it comes to mowing around close quarters with ditches and fences. It is hard to get away from a ditch or fence when your trying to run down the side of it, at least with mine. Zero turn excels by far with that one.
Probably not going to beat the price i gave for mine though...
