What is the least amount of pitch (inches of drop per foot) that is acceptable?

I live in South Carolina, so snow/ice loading is not much of an issue.

Is 1.5" per foot ok?

I live in heavy snow country and recently built a 80 foot long drive shed with a classic shed roof. I don't really like this style, but I wanted a thirteen foot drive in height but without the overpowering look of a huge high roof on top of that just on account of the location. So the pitch is very modest, but with engineered trusses, I met code for the area and then spaced them even closer. I don't want to be told anything about unprecidented weather or snow amounts when the roof fails! Having said that, I am still a bit nervous! DSC03034.jpgDSC03313.jpg

I would stay closer to 4 to 1. will handle heavy rain better with less blowing up under the shingles. Less ice damming backing up under the shingles.
1.5 to 1 is close to flat.

I have a metal 8' x 12' storage building in which I keep the lawn and garden tools and it's 2" per foot. I don't think I'd want to go any less than that, but maybe 1.5" would do on an all metal building like mine, but I agree with Dave if it's going to be shingled roof.

You will probably need a couple of friends to help you get the snow blower up on the roof to clear it.

4/12 is standard for shed roofs means 4 in rise for every 12 in length

When we moved here in 2009 an existing out building had a shed roof with about 1.5" per foot with 2x6 trusses on 24" centers and it has been fine.

We are wanting to take the existing shed roof down and build a 19' addition. If 1.5" per foot will work that would be great, but want to ensure it lasts. I looked at metal roofing and some say not less than 3" per foot. on

I wouldn't go less than 3/12 regardless of material. 4/12 is a good minimum pitch for most materials.

1.5 " will work just fine in your area if shingled use low slope shingles if metal use ww2 ( double ribbed).

The steeper the pitch the more room inside for storage and head room.

Less maintenance with a steep pitch, cheaper shingles.

Yes more lumber, more shingles but overall easier... iMHO !

AND... partly will depend if you want a certain look.
I am putting in a steel building in SoCal, I could get away with very little pitch but I chose an 8/12 to keep in line with the house and with a look similar to a New England Lobsta Shack.
