Most of us are familiar with George Carlin's famous Seven Words You Can't Say On Television. (If not, google it) But in the 36 years since his 1972 stand-up act, some of those words have crept further into the everyday vocabulary of many Americans and at least one of them is used regularly here on TBN which is supposed to be a "family friendly" site.

I am not a prude by any means, and I usually yell at least 6 of these 7 words each time I hit my thumb with a hammer, and use them on occasion when I am out with my drinking buddies, but I have to say that I still feel uncomfortable when people use any of these words around my grandson and during most formal occasions. When I was young I remember being scolded for even using the words **** and **** which are now such a common part of our vocabulary that nobody even notices them in normal conversation. The worst words the tv cowboys ever said were dang, darn, cotten-pickin' and ding blasted. Today I hear the younger generation using the 7 words indiscriminately and I am wondering if most of you think that these 7 words will be completely main-stream in the next 20 years and perhaps replaced by other words. I know that if a new list of words that can not be said on tv comes out, that the n-word will be the first on the list and I am not even sure if the TBN censors will let me even say that on TBN.

You can probably tell that it is cold and rainy here right now and that I am trapped indoors and have too much time on my hands.

edit: I didn't realize that the censors would blip out the words I used that meant the opposite of Heaven and the one that sounds like what a beaver makes that holds back water and yet they allow the use of one of the 7 words in many posts.

Well, I am a big fan of cussing when the occasion to use it arises. :D

However, I will tell you that the more you use it in every day conversation with buddies and colleagues, the more likely it will pop out of your mouth in front of your kids, a nice old lady, or your church pastor. So, I try to keep it to a minimum and have absolutely no problem with telling someone to watch their mouth if I hear 4 of those words anywhere near my kids.

The S word, when describing animal waste is perfectly acceptable...
"Hey, don't step in that horse ****!"
However, using it in any other way is not usually acceptable... "My R4s are worthless pieces of ****!"

P'd off has become acceptable to youth, but I still find it crude and do not let my kids say it.

The T word is not allowed either, as it is crude.

Unfortunately swearing is my worst habit, in fact it's probably the only thing I do habitually, almost an addiction 'cause it's not easy to stop. Odd that despite my frequency of vocal use I pretty much never find the need to write any of the seven. I think I use cursing as a stress reliever, but realize it causes stress for others. MikeD74T

I knew I was a bad parent when I was driving down the road in my pickup truck with my 4 or 5 year old daughter in the car seat next to me. Some old bag was driving 20MPH in a 35 zone and straddling the line, taking up both lanes. After several blocks of this I yelled "Get out of the road you #$%^!! old bag!!!" and shook my fist at her. I looked over and my daughter was shaking her fist and proceeded to repeat exactly what I said. Then we pulled up next to the old bag and my daughter looked at her, then looked at me and said "Hey, that's not an old bag, that's a laaadeeee." and then she gave me a dirty look. Kinda like, why are you cussing at some old lady? Oooooo.... I felt bad and have tried to watch it better around little kids ever since.

Then, when the same daughter was in 5th grade, she came home from school and said, "Dad. I want to start cussing." So I replied "What the $%^&!! do you want to start $%%^&^&!! cussing for?" She replied "Because it sounds like %^&&#!! fun!" Then we cussed back and forth for a few minutes. Then it was over. We told her if she ever wants to cuss, just find me or mom and go in another room so your little sister doesn't hear. I've never heard her cuss outside the home since we had that discussion. Of course, there are cuss words that we do not use. Even we have our standards to maintain. :D

My brother, 12 years younge,r is a plumber. He cuss's up a storm, especially at work. He has cussed while we are doing things; I tell him to lose the potty mouth.

I do on occassion cuss, but not often, and usually like, when I'm by myself in the garage or such.

I think the difference is, I said a bad bad word once or twice when I was little. I ate bar soap for it. My brother, the youngest, spoild-est, did not

Being a Scout leader, I find it disturbing the kids like to use "freakin" or "frickin" as an acceptable substitute for the real "F" word. Niether I, nor some of the other aduults in the Troop, approve. We have had some discussion about that...

Dang, I am the guilty cusser on here I guess. My work environment and folks I am around probably don't help matters much, but as with all things, it is a choice I make.

Yes, my 5 year old daughter when the sales guy asked her if she thought she could drive a Dixon mower looked him dead in the eye and said she could drive the he out of a Dixon mower.. I said danged TV these kids watch these days.

I was listening to my son say Freakin this weekend kind of pondering the thoughts on how to correct it, and thinking that my actions were probably not setting the best of examples.

I think it is a constant slide down a slippery slope, and I think everyone digs in a bit at the points they feel are appropriate for them.

Oh, and as for the wash your mouth out with soap, Bobby Fields washed my mouth out one time with GOJO, back in the 70's I imagine when there was only the original GOJO..... Course he was cussing me the whole time :)

Some of the worst cussers are/were G. W. Bush, Clintons and Richard Nixon... Couldn't complete a sentence without using bad words!

Moss, THAT was funny. But also too true. I have tried to cut back on the bad words because of the kids. I used to spend 90 minutes a day in the truck with my oldest in the back seat. I learned pretty quick I need to set a PROPER example. Some times I did. :D:D:D Course the kids picked up a few words from their mother.:D As I like to reminder her from time to time. :D:D:D

The poop C word is used too much on TV. We don't watch anymore ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. There is nothing on those channels we or the kids want to watch. But before we moved from the city we would watch the reruns of sitcoms before 8:00pm. The network would run a commercial for Everyone Loves Raymond that just repeated the poop C word over and over and over. As an adult it did not bother me. As a parent with children who are all ears that commercial was very unacceptable.

But it is not just language, it is also actions. Our kids watch alot of Disney channel programming. From DISNEY my little girls have learned to bend over and shake the booty. NOT acceptable. And they have learned to say shake your booty. I think Walt is spinning in his grave.

My grandfather was a lifer in the USMC who served in WWII and Korea. I don't think I ever heard the man utter a sentence that was not punctuated with a cuss word. :)

Later,
Dan
