Kubota
My dad bought a new 2013 Kubota M7040SU (Economy Version) MFWD with the hydraulic shuttle shift about two years ago. He likes the tractor, but it is geared too high for loader work, since his last tractor was a new Holland and it was geared really low and would go at a snail pace. It was much easier to attach implements with the New Holland. With this Kubota being the economy version it also lacked the draft float control, which was nice when mowing or using a grader blade, so he misses this function. Also, the Kubota seems a bit top heavy when mowing on any type slope, but the maneuverability of the Kubota is awesome and it seems to have good power, but not a ton of torque.

He is thinking about selling the Kubota and buying a John Deere. A local farmer is thinking about selling his 2012 John Deere (5075M MFWD and H260 loader) the tractor has about 250 hours on the clock. From what it tells me it is is in very good condition. He is thinking about making the farmer an offer on the tractor, but hasn't made up his mind if he should just stick with the Kubota. He has about 45 acres of pasture land and primarily only bush hogs and uses the loader to move things on the farm.

From what I've read the 5075M is a good tractor, but from what I've read online it starts to develop electrical issues after 300 hours. When he bought the Kubota he wanted the better M7040 version with the bells and whistles, but all he could find was the economy 7040SU version with the Hyd shuttle shift (this is a real nice feature). The Kubota is a simple no thrills tractor, which can be a good thing and it seems the Kubota is a reliable unit.

Would he be stepping down on reliability from going to the Kubota 7040 to the Deere 5075M?

I remember looking at the M series a couple years ago when he was looking at buying the kubota and I do remember they looked very heavy duty built as compared to the Kubota.

One last question, what do you think a fair price would be to offer for a 2012 John Deere 5075M MFWD with an H260 loader (around 250 hours and in very good condition)?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

I know nothing of JD but it would be wise for your father to test drive it prior to purchase. I can not imagine that the Kubota in low range - first gear is too fast for loader work. The M7040 is almost identical to mine and you have to set stakes to see if you are even moving when in L range - 1st gear.

Compared to his last tractor a New Holland TN55 this Kubota is WAY faster than the New Holland in low range 1st gear. I've been on both and can attest there is a big difference in low range 1st gear.

Did the New Holland have a creeper gear installed on it, do you know?

I'm not sure, but he bought it new. It was an 8x8 transmission on the NH. The NH had 26 rear tires and the Kubota has 30 rear tires.

CAnt comment on transmission speeds, as that sort of thing is usually only listed in the manual. Do you have the manual and can you look up and see what top speed is in 1st and 2nd gear?

As to tractors in general, the 5075m is quite a bit more tractor. Its about 2000# heavier, bigger tires, and about 13hp more.

As to stability, does he have the tires set to the widest position on his kubota?

I will need to check his manual on the low gear, but I think it was something like 1.2 MPH. I wish he still had the TN55 manual, but he gave it to the new owner, so I don't know how to compare the two. All that I know they did to the tires was add beat juice to liquid fill. The Kubota has the cast wheels, but I don't think it had any spacers. He bought it brand new, so other than that it should have been stock.

Actually, the Kubota is 62PTO, so it is a tad bigger PTO HP on the John Deere.

I'll take my '11 Kubota M7040 with 1275 hrs on the tach with zero problems handling 100's of rd bales plus many cutting acres of hay over a JD 5075 with electrically controlled reverser ANY DAY. I normally load/unload rd bales in low range/4th gear or high range/low gear.

M7040, 1st low range, it's the gear I use for implement attachment and I can't imagine wanting slower.

For loader work....I've NEVER wish I could go slower. Hay bales, always high range. Digging dirt, low range, and only in heavy digging do I resort to 1st gear.

Can't comment on the JD. I like my M7040.
