I used PVC for one winter and it worked fine but wore out quickly (this was on my rear blade).
To make it fit snug I slit the PVC pipe on my table saw with the blade cranked down low so it barely stuck above the table (just enough to cut through the wall of the pipe. Worked like a charm.
Once I was happy with the basic idea, the next year I changed to a piece of metal pipe. For that, I welded on ears and just bolted it up under the cutting edge.
