Just learned something today... Sediment bowls are meant to mount 1 way and 1 way only. (At least on these old Fords)
Evidently someone put the smaller Ford Sediment bowl on my 860 before I owned it. I've frequently fought with issues of keeping it running. Well, today I found out why.

The picture below shows the hole in the retaining bolt aligned with the channel that allows fuel passage.

The picture below shows how the hole is not aligned when mounted the opposite way (as it was on my 860 for about 10+ years now). It'd work just enough, but would frequently die off. I've put in coils, electronic ignition, tune-up kits, shut-off valve and fuel line, then still run into stalling. Can't believe it.

This was decussed in this 2003 article with a fix for it. I have used it in the past. In fact I told a friend about last week who has his gas tank off for repair on his 860.

No Way! The even titled it "sediment bowl alignment 101". That's hilarious. If I didn't know better, I'd accuse myself of plagiarism. Ha ha. :)

I just cleaned out and semi-rebuilt the carb today on my 881. I found out that my sediment bowl was backwards as well - the hole in the bolt was not aligned as shown in the article. I switched it around thinking I have just solved all my problems about this tractor being frequently hard to start (to the point I run the battery down) and hard to keep running once it's started.

I bought the carburetor kit from Stein Tractor for my TSX 62 carburetor. I was not thrilled with it. I got the thing apart to find out that the diagrams and the parts for my carburetor were not the same. Only about 1/3 of the parts in the kit matched the parts in my carburetor.

Well, I replaced the parts that were a match and used the old parts for everything else after cleaning them up. Put everything back together all cleaned out. Just tried to start it and couldn't get it going.

Adjusted the idle screw on the carb by backing it out an additional 1 1/2 turns and it finally tried to turn over but it didn't fire up. By the time I got that far, the battery was dead.

I am beyond frustrated. I paid $3400 for this tractor in April and I've gotten almost no use out of it.

I wish my grandpa were still around. He'd have this thing running like a song in no time.

Could be a number of little things, so don't give up hope. Before switching to electronic ignition, I had to clean the points frequently for it to hit.
