securing flip up ramps

I just traded for an 18" car hauler that has pretty standard flip up ramps. They are locked in vertical position by a piece of 2" flat stock that is pinned to both the ramps and the side of the trailer. I don't like it much. It seems to take 3 hands to get everything lined up.The flat stock always seems to be in the way, no matter which pin I undo. Anyone have a better setup?:thumbdown:

I have the same setup. I disconnect the ramp and not the end that attaches to the trailer. When hooking back up, just take the lynch pin out of the ramp before lifting. You can then set the 2" onto the pin and secure with the lynch pin. The only thing I really don't like is that if you drop the 2" flat stock, you've just broken a taillight. I have to make some kind of shroud to go over the lights to protect them from the occasional 'oops'. Kind of wish I had the spring-loaded ramps, but can't justify the $ when I already have something that works.

Dad had a Hudson Bros. trailer with fold up ramps. They use a short piece of chain welded to the frame of the trailer; it's pulled through a hole in a piece of flat stock welded to the side of the ramp and a link is slid into a slot. It's quick and easy--there are no holes and pins to align--and it's cheap. Having used both flat bar w/ pins and chains in a slot on the ramp, I prefer the chains.
