I have a 445 with the original suspension seat that is starting to crack and split. I was at my local JD dealer the other day and was admiring the new seat on a brand new x739. The seat is bigger, more comfortable and the material used is more 'leather-like'. It not only appears a lot nicer, but looks like it will hold up better. The suspension mechanism looked like it hadn't changed and the new seat still mounts with the single long pin. Does anyone know if these newer seats will fit or tried it? I asked the guy at the dealership and he just shrugged his shoulders saying that he wasn't sure. Less than helpful...
Thanks.

G'day and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

I'm not sure if 'the guy from the dealership' was being less than helpful with out actually seeing your quite old tractor (at most built in 1970). What would you think if he had said, "Sure!", then sold you the seat & let you fend for yourself?

On the other hand, anthing can be 'jury-rigged' to fit. TBN is just the place to ask for help.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply. My 2001 445 is a agreeably older than the new x739, but still a far cry from a 1970... The reason I thought the guy at the dealership was less than helpful was that there was a 1998 455 for sale which is the diesel version of the same machine that I have sitting just down the row from the x739. I would have gladly ordered the new seat if I could have got a little help with confirmation that it would have fit.

Sorry Mate about the year on your 445. I went to TractorData.com to have a look at what your 445 was and that's what came up. In fact, I just had a look there again and the 455 wasn't even listed so now I'm confused. :mur:

You're right then to be shirty with that particular bloke at the dealership. At the very least he could've pointed you in the direction of their service department who would've been (hopefully) more knowledgeable. Oh, well.

I also understand your desire to have a more comfy seat. When I bought my D110 I insisted that they swap the existing seat for one off of a D130, which had a higher back, as part of the deal. So, that being said, I'd recommend bypassing the salesman on the lot and go straight to the service department & talk to a mechanic... They'd probably appreciate it too as most people simply talk to the people 'out front', ignoring the knowledge 'in the back'.

Look under Lawn Tractors instead of Farm Tractors on TractorData.com. It shows 445 and 455 as built from 1992 to 2001. Both are nice tractors.

Thanks JD755 for putting me on the right track... I now see the proper 445 plus the 455!

Obviously a 'rookie mistake' on my behalf, but in the long run I've learnt something new today.

Go here..
John Deere - Parts Catalog

Search for X739 and select the machine
The go to the "Sectional" index
Select section 80 for the "Wheels, frame..." etc
Then you will see pages 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83 etc that all show seat options

The X739 had several options for seats so you will need to determine which one of these you looked at.
I would GUESS that what you looked at is in section 78 and is part number AM142205. (About $450 for just the seat)

That long pin is the same part number that fits on the 445 so that part might work.
But the frame/suspension is a different number so the springs underneath may be a problem.

I would go back to the dealership and do some serious measuring with a sketch of yours.

The Deluxe High Back seat for the 445 would be a A117489 (I think) and is around $160
