Scrap metal source in So. Maryland?

Anyone know where to buy steel in Southern Maryland? Scrap or even new, for that matter.

Want to start playing with welding. Can get small angle and flat at local HW stores, but only close "scrap" place is a non-ferrous recycling center. Do any of the auto junkyards carry it?

Have a project in mind requiring some square tubing. Also, went looking for extended steel grate as a screen for my rops - biggest I could find was 2' x 2'.

I found places around Balt. and Manassas, but don't want to travel that far.

Thank you! Lots of info. I'd love to find a place where I can just walk around and pick and choose what I need. I think KennyD was interested in a place in Westminster, MD (an auto junk yard) where you can browse for stuff. Not real close but if I get out that way I'll check it out. Unfortunately when I do get out there I'm all dressed in a coat and tie, not the best clothes to be wandering through a junkyard. Again thanks.

good luck, and tell me how you make out. I get steel from Boulevard Sales in Elkridge off of route 1. It is not cheap... but they have stock when you need it. Wayne

Other than scrap yards you can check places like hydraulic repair shops. Since many places like this do repairs on dump trucks, tow trucks and bucket trucks they keep angle, tubing and plate in stock and often sell it. Another place to check would be any local welding supply stores. And don't forget to check for a local Fastenal store, they sell all kinds of metal.

Probably won't help you, but I had fairly good luck finding scrap aluminum tubing over in Salisbury... Delmarva Recycling, 909 Boundary St., and I noticed they have steel, copper, etc. I have purchased new steel from a fabricator to the NE of Balto., towards Bel Air, called Moxleys, but I don't have their address.

This is the place I use.
They have everything you need and can cut lengths for a small charge.

Thanks guys! You've at least given me ideas for starters - have a fastenal near by and a local welding shop I keep meaning to check out. Was gonna just start calling places, but hate that.

Elkridge could make for a nice half day trip

Depends on what you're really looking for. Brandywine junk yards has lots of "stuff"; heavy equipment, heavy trucks and cars. Their location in Bowie handles small and medium trucks. There's a salvage yard off of Piscataway road between Brandywine and Clinton. Couple of yards in Oxon Hill and Accokeek, Eugene Johnson's place in Bryans Road, etc. Couple of Amish places, Loveville and off Rt. 6 between Mechanicsville and LaPlata. But almost all of them cleaned house when their junk was worth a small fortune. Have you seen what a steel shredder can do to a car, truck, etc? For the most part, they don't remove fuel, coolant or hydraulics anymore. Into the hopper and out comes confetti
