I have to opportunity to purchase a 32" Scag walk behind mower. The asking price is $900.00. I don't know at this point how old it is.

What do you have to look out for with these particular mowers? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Randy

Age, wear and tear, hours on the engine, type or make of engine (how it was cared for), condition of the deck (rust or holes), loose spindle (and / or bearings), drive belts can be easily replaced, clutch engagement of the mower, and the drive wheels, all inter-connected to what bang for the $US900 is left in the machine.

Pictures would be nice to see what $US900 is attached.

Scag is a good machine. The 32" leaves a small cut path but then that is all in one's preference of coverage and time. If it's half-way decent, $US900 can't hurt much, even if for another 3 - 5 seasons of residential cutting (or hopefully more).

Commercial cutting is another story.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the machine last night and found out that it is a 36" width of cut not 32". The mower looks real clean and well maintained.

The only thing I am not sure is normal are the two shaft ends that stick up above the deck. When I grab onto them I can wiggle them back and forth. I don't know if this indicates bearing wear or what.

Are you talking about the spindles that adjust the cutting height? There are no bearings there, but there should be grease fittings on those and hopefully the previous owner kept them lubricated to cut down on the wearing of the spindles. But that shouldn't worry you too much.
