Recently purchased a JD2720 with an SB1154 Snowblower by Frontier. Routine servicing requires driveline (PTO connecting tubes) lubrication of various components. The driveline is enclosed in a four-piece plastic shield that must be removed to access the telescopic tubes and other components within. Unfortunately, the manual for the SB1154 makes no reference to the proper way to disassemble and remove the plastic shielding. There appear to be some fastening devices surrounding the shield cones (at each end of the four piece assembly) but absolutely no instruction as to how these should be removed. Didn't seem like a great idea to experiment with a "muscle disassembly." Could anyone out there shed some light on how these things come apart, please? I can forward an actual digital photograph if need be.

Thanks,

I have an SB1164 and had the pto shaft apart to cut it to size for my tractor so I have a bit of experience...
On each end of the shaft is the larger diameter shield which has 3 slotted plastic screw type plugs. These are rotated 90 degrees with a slotted screwdriver and removed. I gently pried them out with the screwdriver or you could use a pair of pliers. After they are removed, you can slide the it down. If the blower is not attached to the tractor, you can slide one end of the shaft out and apply grease to it before reinserting.

hTH,
Mike

The driveline on my Frontier SB1164 does operate within a plastic shield. For safety, the plastic shield isn't designed to be removed. Maintenance is easier if you disconnect from tractor first. That will allow you to turn the driveline by hand so you see the grease zerks on the universal joints. Operator's manual says:

Driveline - 8 hours - Grease each universal joint. Separate the sliding parts and cover each one of them with grease.
Driveline - 16 hours - Oil the connections.
Drive Shaft - 24 hours of operation - Grease fitting on shear plate.

I've had mine apart as well. Gave me a bit of trouble before I sat right down and got it right...

Those "plastic screws" turn like 90degrees and then you actually "pull" them out. I hate reading directions but I didn't want to wreck the protective shield either.

Once you "get it" the system works moderately well. No real biggie.

Mikey,
Thank you very much for the informative instruction in reply to my post. Disassembly worked just as you described and I'm a much more savvy owner thanks to you. Along the same lines....the manual refers to servicing the "shield bearings" every 8 hours but after having removed the shields, I such no such bearings. Would they be referring to the channel in which the split plastic collar rides? If so, I'd hardly call that a bearing. Am I missing something here?

JDGreenGrass,
As you said, once you get it, it's not that big a deal. Thank you for your input.

I think you are correct about the "shield bearings." Once the shield(s) are reinstalled, you will see the plastic grease zerks. I think in so many words, they are saying to hit them with grease every 8 hrs.

glad I stumbled upon this thread. just had my 1154 out this past storm for the first time. I hope I can get 8hrs in a year to maintain it. with its ability to clear snow in no time, I need to find a way to extend seat time.
