I know what recaps are, but never heard of putting sawdust in them. Must have been a local thing?
)

As I remember, just as an addition to info. Recaps were made from old tires. I believe the tire had to have nylon or some kind of fiber threads to hold original tire together. I don't think they were done as much with steel belted radials. The dealer would scuff of the remaining tread; down to the chords. Then strips of raw rubber were stuck to tire. Then the tire was placed in a mold device that was tightened real tight around tire. Heat was applied and the raw rubber was formed into tread and molded to tire in a process; I believe called vulcanizing.

You would be wise to run recaps at regular speeds. At high speed they could easily fail. Pieces of tire had been known to ruin fenders when tearing apart at high speed?

Tire question of the day; Does anyone know what "porta walls" were??

Sure. We used to sell them in our Family's Western Auto Store*. When white wall tires were "gotta have" back in the 50's and 60's, portawalls were just the white rings you could attach to the sidewall of your plain ol tires. I think they were pinched between the tire and rim.

I do and I miss them. The one nearest to my home in SC changed to a Stihl/Scag/etc. dealership some years ago.

Apparently, a few stores have been allowed to continue using the name.

"In the true independent spirit of the associates, there are still Western Auto stores in Pocahontas, Arkansas; Alexandria, Louisiana; Marianna, Florida; Lincolnville, Maine; Stevensville, Maryland; Starkville, Mississippi; Forest, and Morristown, Tennessee; Trinity, Texas; Henderson; Siler City, North Carolina; Grafton, Virginia[14]; Kermit, West Virginia; and several other smaller cities and towns around the United States proudly displaying their store name as "Western Auto". Advance agreed to allow stores who acted within these limitations to continue to use the "Western Auto" name. Most of these stores acted within the limitations proposed by Advance, though to this day Advance has decided not to bring any legal action against stores not acting within the imposed limitations."

I remember and liked Western Auto also. On the porta walls. I remember them to be an extra because white walls were more expensive tires. Then, if not mistaken, raised white letters became the latest and greatest. Thus, more $$ for those tires. I'm not sure, but then I think those old fashioned white walls became less expensive than the "new" latest and greatest....."black walls". Don't rember if there was an upcharge for plain black tires.

And also there was the wide white walls that eventually gave way to narrow white walls. If you had old inventory, you couldn't give it away. Red walls were in there someplace but I don't recall portawall versions. All this from 50 years ago. Now-my wife just found some cabbage stuff in the back of the refrigerator and I can barely remember cooking it...

I just use regular tires. But I have found that spreading ashes (if you burn wood) increases traction on snow and ice tenfold.

Lots of guys keep bags of sand or cat litter in their truck or car just incase. I keep a bucket of ashes with a lid on it. It doesnt roll around like sand or cat litter. And the good it does is just simply amazing.

I usually spread it on the hill comming up my drive. It usually gets icy. The other benefits are.

1. a good way to get rid of waste ashes
2. on a sunny day it helps melt the snow/ice much faster
