Hi folks I'm new to this. I want to say this forum is a goldmine! Thanks all.I've had a s650g for about 10 years and I'm doing the first tune up. I got part nos from here. Replaced everything only to find out the coil was bad. Replaced coil with one that needed an external resistor. with the resistor it wouldn't start,without it would start but the coil got hot. then I got a resistor with about half the resistance, still wouldn't start, jumped from distributer to coil and it started and ran perfect after removing jumper. Now, do I have the wrong coil? Do I need one with an internal resistor? What is the napa number for the correct coil/resistor? Thanks in advance - Jim

I would guess that the resistor would be installed like in the early 12 volt chrysler cars.

The 6 volt coil would be wired from the ignition key in 'run position' with the resistor in series.

A wire would come from the starter solinoid (could be at the key 'start' position) and bypasses the resistor. That way only while hitting the starter will the 6 volt coil get 12 volts for a hot (quick) start and when the start is released the coil goes back to resistor and 6 volt circuitry, running cooler.

some info that might help someone. my mechanic said that the voltage on the small wire on the negitive side of the coil should be between 5 and 7 volts, if under 5 it won't start over 7 it will burn the points [maybe even plugs]. if it's over 7 volts put a resister inline to drop the voltage. I put a .8 ohm on mine and it reads 6 volts now. Jim
